I am getting ready to pick up a new 3w... I have always hit my 15* 3 woods a good 30 yards less than my driver off the tee. You can see my current 3 wood in my sig... I am thinking about going with a 75g shaft to gain a little accuracy, after all, the thing I really want is a good secondary driver for tight holes, and something that I might use occaisionally out of the fairway on reachable par 5's that are beyond my 220ish 2H. I am wondering...

1) how much distance will I loose with a 75g shaft as opposed to a 65?
2) would it make more sense to get a strong 3 (13*) to make up for some distance loss?
3) anyone have any suggestions on a good club?

I am looking to spend less than $150, but don't mind slightly used.

thanks for the link and info... I have heard great things about the now defunct Sonartec and would love to have one... just wish I could hit one first.

Any chance you will be in NC in the next few days?

Why not try a genuine Nike SQ? If you want a complete change from Nike then have a look on ebay for a tour edge geomax bazooka. I picked mine up new (sold as used but had never been hit) for £36 ($55). It has a 65g grafalloy shaft as standard but it is about an inch longer than some 3 woods so will help you gain a little more distance.

its true, they are awesome fairway woods. VERY long. and the great thing is, you can buy a brand new one on ebay for around $65 usually, and if you dont like it, just resell it and you'll prolly get most of your money back. i never hit one before i bought mine on ebay. i just heard rave reviews about the GS Tour line on another website, so I went ahead and bought one, and was so glad i did. then i bought another one.

OK... you better be right, I just ebayed one up... the one that is now in my sig should be here sometime next week. Thanks for the suggestion, I actually told my wife last week that I wouldn't mind trying one if only I could find one (obviously I hadn't really looked yet)... just hope I like it, usually I won't buy a club without hitting it first.

Everything I have read suggests they are long... so I'm hoping that and the fact that I got the 14* should make my 3-wood significantly longer than my 2-hybrid off the tee and off the turf, making it more usefull.

Cool man! Trust me, you are going to LOVE it. They are awesome fairway woods. Hope you got a good deal on one! You just cant beat a brand new Sonartec 3 wood for under a hundred bucks. Let us know how you like it!

You're not going to lose all that much difference in distance with that much of a heavier shaft. Perhaps the swing weight will change to something youre not acustomed but you will adjust. I use a 90 gram shaft on my 3-wood and have no complaints.

Well, I got my 3-wood yesterday and played with it today. My first impression when I felt it last night was that the tip was a little on the flexie side... but it seems to load just fine with my swing speed and I feel like the control is all there. On the range I did well with it... I'm pretty sure it is longer than my previous 3-wood, which fixes my problem of having my 3-wood barely go any further than my 2 hybrid. This one seems to be a good 15-20 yards longer than the 2 hybrid. My accuracy seemed good, but it's a little early to tell. Same with ease of use, felt good so far, and I hit three good shots and one bad one with it at the course, but I still need to play it a little more to know for certain. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the recomendation, and it looks like you helped me out and found me a keeper for a great value. Also, the red shaft and black head match my FT-i nicely (my other new club which I love) which is a little added bonus.

    • Day 444 - 2025-12-18 Light day of hotel room work. GEARS Summit v2.0 today. Good day.
    • Day 38 (18 Dec 25) - got out in the backyard with grandson this afternoon.  We got into a little game of pitching the ball from about 25yds to a target point just off the asphalt lane behind the backyard.  Goal - just clear it with a quick hop and stop.  Focused on using the wedge swing motion I was talking with the course pro yesterday….smooth and thru just bruising the grass.  In addition to a concentrated focus on technique, it also called for a quiet mind locked in on target point.  Rehearsed this with both the 50° and 55° wedges.
    • I listened to the Shaun Webb one about the swing coach app. Sounds like a great thing and will (hopefully) be very useful for me. I do think the hosts are underestimating where AI could be in a few years. Right now it's just regurgitating stuff that it has been told or it has scrubbed from somewhere else and a human guiding things will be quite a lot more helpful than just the AI, but it's going to keep developing and it will reach the stage where it's figuring this stuff out on its own. Time will come when it will have you do a TPI style screen and take various height/arm length/leg length etc. measurements, have you tell it some history and your time constraints and goals and what not and it will watch a video of your swing face on and DTL and it will know exactly what you need to work on.
    • I found it entertaining, but the announcing was lousy.  How did the measuring on the final shot start with Rory being closer and being told he won, and then with no explanation it turns out Scottie won?  Weird.
    • Day 128 12-18 Worked on rotation and getting to lead side. Still working on the flow feeling while doing that. Recorded swings.
