The only things in life I do not skimp on are Golf Equipment, Firearms and Coffee brands. Everything else I buy generic. That being said I am throwing caution to the wind and I am going to build a complete set of golf clubs from components. I received the majority of the stuff today from Golf Galaxy and Golfsmith and should begin the assembly tomorrow.

I really want to see what the differences are between high end OEM and a complete set I am going to build for around $600. I ordered:

Maltby KE4 Tours- 5-PW- These came today and I must admit they look really nice. I had swung the 4I at GG and it felt pretty good. The one I had was pretty beat up so I could not get a good feel for the quality. I am pleased with how they look.

Snake Eyes Viper XT Hyrbrids 21 and 24 degrees- Again these look quite nice. I had never seen or hit them so it was a leap of faith.

Lynx Black Cat Tour 3w & 5w- Have not been delivered yet. Never seen or hit them.Fingers crossed.

Maltby CT250 PRO Driver w/ Aldila NV 65 Shaft- I have had this since early Feb and it is quite a nice driver. There is no torque in the shaft and I have yet to hit a hook or draw. Might reshaft.

Snakeyes ProLaunch 65 Wood Shafts- These look exactly like the Graffaloy shaft I have in my Titleist Driver. I bought three so I might stick one in my Maltby driver.

FST 115 Pro Stepless Shafts- Came today and look like stepless shafts. Can't say much about them yet.

Snake Eyes ProForce Graphite Iron Shaft- Came today as well. I bought them for my hybrids but it seems I made a mistake. They do not fit into the hybrids head. Will keep posted.

Lynx Black Cat Tour Wedges 55 & 59- These also look fantastic. I am going to bend them to 56 and 60 to match my Clevelands that I currently play.

Snake Eyes Viper Tour Putter Head- Has not arrived but for $10 if I hate it I am not going to be that upset

Snake Eyes Putter Shaft- Not Arrived yet.

When I started the process I was going to have fun with it and go as cheap as possible. As I got started I ended up uping my price points so this experiment had a fighting chance. I will post some pix when I get them all shafted and ready to go.

LOL! I don't know if you're being serious or not, but that is one of the funniest statements I've read in a long time! I might have to put that in my signature!

In myBagBoy Revolver: HiBore XL 10.5° ⢠HiBore 3W ⢠Halo 2i, 3i & 4i
MX900 5-PW ⢠MP-R 52-07° & 58-10° ⢠Studio Select Squareback 1

Carl Spackler: This is a hybrid. This is a cross of Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia. The amazing stuff...

what are you using to bend the club heads? Have you assembled clubs in the past? I recently assembled a set of Toski irons for a friend and he is VERY happy with the results.

What clubs are you currently hitting? What wedges? It looks like you are not building any wedges.

In my bag:

some golf clubs

a few golf balls

a bag of tee's some already broken the rest soon to be

a snickers wrapper (if you have seen me play, you would know you are not going anywhere for a while)

and an empty bottle of water

Serious. I will skimp and save everywhere in my life but those three catagories.

I am actually having it done by the manager of the local Golf Galaxy. I have asked him to show me how it is done the first time around. He built my driver and seemed compitent.

I currently switch back and forth between MP-14's and Deep Red Tour II's. My wedges are Clevelands and I am building Lynx Black Cat Tour wedges from components.

Nice set! Is that putter the 8802 style or Anser style?

It is a black 8802 style.

How did you get that putter for $10

I actually misspoke. The putter head was $29.95. I think the shaft for it was $9.95 I can't seem to find it on the receipts. I hope I ordered one.

Everything has been assembled and hit. Here is the 2 minute review:

1) Irons- Total and abosolute POS. Read my full review. http://thesandtrap.com/forum/showthread.php?t=22220

2) Lynx Wedges- Fantastic looking and performance. Not quite the feel I am used to but they are a great club. thumbs up!

3)) Lynx Fairway Woods- They look and feel great. No complaints and head to head against my Sonartech they actually hit the balls as far but much higher.

4) Snake Eyes Hybrids- Never got to him them since it was hard to find a .335 hybrid shaft.

5) Snake Eyes Putter- Feels great and a bargain.

I cannot stress enough how crappy those irons are. One thing I did not mention in my longer review is that if you mis-hit the iron out towards the toe, it sends the same shock of pain as you get when hitting an aluminum bat off of the handle on cold day. It actually is very painful. Never had an iron hurt in my life.

Are you certain that the crapiness of the irons didn't have something to do with the shafts. After all, shafts have a LOT to do with how a club feels, and you used pretty much the cheapest thing around... I have heard others who like Maltby heads, but they used Project X or Dynamic Golds. I think you should put a good shaft in the 6-iron, just to see how it feels.

My Clubs: Callaway FT-i Tour LCG 9.5° w/ Matrix Ozik Xcon 6 stiff; Sonartec GS Tour 14° w/ Graphite Design Red Ice 70 stiff; Adams Idea Pro 2h(18°) & 3h(20°) w/ Aldila VS Proto 80 stiff; Adams Idea Pro Forged 4-PW w/ TT Black Gold stiff; Cleveland CG12 DSG RTG 52°-10° & 58°-10°; Odyssey...

I think you make a very good point and I will take your advice. What impact do you think a better shaft would have on distance?

it's hard to say... I've hit the same club with a couple different shafts and had 20 yard variances with the club. Some shafts just don't load right if they aren't set up for YOU, and some shafts feel more harsh than others. I have never played with the FST shafts, they may be good, but one way to know for certain is to shaft one of the irons with a shaft you know you like, then see how it performs. Worst case... you waste $20 and an hour or two.

Keep us updated if you try this.

I was going to take some shots of the clubs this week and post them. I also built a set of Maltby MTFs and they are sweet. I will let you know when I get them up.
