This year I've made two goals for my game:1. Work on my short game so I can get back to where it was and 2. Make sure that I have three woods I can hit and be accurate with. A few years ago I traded off a hybrid that I couldn't hit for a 5 wood wilson fat shaft that I can smash it consistently and I'm extremely accurate with. Two weeks ago, I bought a Ping Rapture because I could hit the hell out of the ball (240-250) and just loved the feel. So that left my 980f 3 wood. Now when I got this club I loved it because I could hit it straight and consistent, instead of fading it out as I did with all my other clubs. I've noticed the past two years, since my swing has changed with instruction I started hooking it. At first it was a little draw and it wound up turning into a straight duck hook. So this morning I went to Golfsmith. I started looking and picked out a few 3 woods. All new 3 woods (Ping, titleist, callaway, etc.) and then I started looking at the used clubs and picked out afew of them to hit. For some reason, out of all the woods I hit the one I got the best results from and the best feel from (Both on and off the tee) was a Cleveland Launcher strong 3. So I brought my old three wood and my old R5 in and wound up getting thirty dollars in fee merchandise along with the three wood. So I got it re-gripped to match my other clubs and picked up a box of nxt tours and week called it even.

Now, my brother, who is a better golfer than I and is currently studying for his PGM told me I should have gotten something newer. But I don't think I'm wrong here because I love the feel of the club and I can straight up hit the hell out it. Am I wrong here for getting it?

Why something newer? Personally, I don't think technology has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years. If you like the look of it, hit it well, and are confident with it, done deal IMO.

FYI, my driver is at least 4 years old, my irons going on 10, and my putter 20. The only new items in my bag are my wedges, the grooves were shot on my old ones. Every year I think about getting a new driver or irons, hit what's new, and come to the realization that my clubs are fine. Plus, at least for me anyway, a new driver isn't going to fix my awful short game.

In my bag:

Cleveland Hi Bore XLS 8.5* X Stiff
Mizuno MP 650 13*
Halo 22 Deg Apex Plus 4-E Apex Plus Gap Wedge CG15 54 Deg CG10 58 Deg Anser 4 ProV1x

It sounds like the clubs are fine, but your swing that has changed. The club did not just start hooking because it turned another year older. If your swing was proper you could hit an old Persimmon driver all day and not worry about the left or right side. Work on the Indian, and the arrow will go straight.

In my bag are
Hibore XLS 10.5*
Hibore XLS 22* 3i Hybrid
TA7 irons 3-PW, SW
CG11 60* LW VP #5 putter.

Good point but the thing is I'm not asking if you think I did the right thing by switching clubs out. The reason I switch was , other than my teaching pro recommended me going to neutral weighted club on both, because I got a great ball flight and distance out of these two neutral clubs vs. my draw weighted driver and closed faced three which hooked. I'm glad I made the switch. My question was do you guys think I did the right thing by going with a three wood that I am confident in and is a few years older or should I have went for the newer technology.

    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
