I recently bought a new putter (Cleveland Classic 3) which is a toe-hang putter, as opposed to my XG #7, which was face-balanced. I have recently been putting horribly (20+ putts per 9 holes) and wondering what the cause of it was. I did start using a different grip yesterday, which a produced a (9-hole) score of 18 putts. Still, I have two questions:

1. How do I determine whether I have a SBST stroke, or an arced stroke?
2. Say I do have a SBST stroke. How much will having a toe-hang putter, like the Classic 3, affect my putting?

Personally, I have always found a center shafted putter seems to work best with the SBST putting style, although any face balanced putter works fine for this. However, very few people actualy have a SBST putting stroke - almost everyone has at least some arc to the stroke. Putters with a toe hang are definitely a better fit for an arced stroke, but this is not to say they will not also work for the SBST since it's usually going to have some arc anyway.

When it comes right down to it the putter that works best for you and your stroke is completely dependent on you. I used to have a SBST stroke (with a center shafted 2-ball) and changed to more of an arcing stroke a year ago or so and switched to a blade at that time. Not putting well, I switched to a heel shafted mallet. I found I struggled more with this style putter so I went back to a center shafted mallet (currently 2-ball putter) and have gotten my stroke back, still using an slight arced stroke. One of the guys I play with regularly has a putter that is almost identical to mine, but he uses a very pronounced arc stroke and is a very good putter. The point being, you simply need to find what you are most comfortable with from the perspective of feel, looks and results.
