So its been a few years since I took golf seriously, but now I'm trying to start back up. I've been reading on this forum a lot lately while hitting the range over the past few weeks, and finally was able to play my first round since last august this morning (shot an 88! with one drive in the water and one OB) I was happy with how I struck the ball today (9 GIR, could have had 1-2 more but I left my replacement 7i at home by accident) and chipped/pitched pretty well around the greens. The greens were in bad shape (they'd recently been aerated and covered with sand ) and my putting really suffered (35 putts 3 one putts, 2 three putts) I hit my driver well on the front, it had good distance and I hit 3/5 fairways with it, on the back 9 I still made solid contact and had good distance but I didn't hit a single fairway with it. I tried hitting my 3 wood but I did worse with it than I did with the driver. The result was I was scrambling a lot and had to hit from the trees a few times on the back.

Since I haven't bought any new equipment in 8-9 years I was planning on getting some new wedges first (probably 52*, and 58*) and then adding a hybrid or two and replacing my lost 7i or picking up a used iron set and eventually a new driver.

I still plan on getting new wedges first but I'm beginning to think I might want to get a new driver (and maybe a new 3 wood) sooner than later to help me off the tee. Also how easy is it to hit low punch shots with hybrids? since I had to do that a few times today I don't want to take that shot out of my bag until I'm out in the fairway. I went to edwin watts last week and got some new footjoys and I tried to go look at drivers but really didn't know where to start (they all looked huge, my current driver is 260cc) Other than the wedges I plan on getting the rest of the equipment used either at local stores or on ebay. What are some high quality drivers/fairway woods that are affordable (

Normally I buy all my golf equipment off Ebay. However, since you're in the market for a driver and 3 wood, I say go to any of the big golf retailer (Golfsmith, TGW, etc...) sites and avail yourself of the deal the major manufacturers are offering. You can get a 460cc driver (2007/08 models)from Callaway or TM and get a matching fairway wood for a dollar!

My Tools of Ignorance:

Driver: Ping I20 9.5*
Woods/Hybrids: Cobra AMP 3W and 3 HY

Putters: Scotty Cameron  35" (Several of the flow neck blade variety)

Ball: Bridgestone B330-RX and Srixon Z-Star

Bag: Nike Performance Carry
