Good post - the embedded ball rule is one that many players fail to use or don't know. Cheers

I agree that most people get it wrong, but that's usually because most people seem to think that you can do it from anywhere - the rough, etc. The key part of that rule is "cut to fairway height or lower." So basically fairway, fringe, or tee. Unless local rules extend it through the green.

I play it down at all times. I won't even play "lift clean and place" even if allowed to do so by Local Rules.

anytime me and my friends play golf, we play as if we were in the final group of the masters and the world is watching us...

honestly we follow all the rules...no mulligans...no improving the lies. nothing like that.

we are all trying to make it big, so we play as if we were in a tournament. cant take a free drop or roll the ball for a better lie on tour, so we dont do it now.

Sorry, what I mean is do you allow improving ones lie, either in the fairway or in the rough. I don't mean moving your ball to a better position (i.e. around a tree) but "rolling it" as others have coined, to improve your lie.

When playing golf, I play it as it lies. What is the name of this other game you refer to?

Playing the ball down leads to better iron play I think. I can see improving the lie in certain cases (casual water, lift/clean/place situations or unusual ground conditions that could be considered 'ground under repair'), but for the most part I prefer the ball to be sitting down anyway as it helps keep iron contact more consistent. In a scramble I will sometimes improve my lie for fairway wood or my 2H, but even then I play the ball down for my irons.

I play it where it stops. As I stated in another tread the only exception is in a non-competition if there are rocks that could damage my clubs I move the ball.
