On a whim, I bought a set of the Callaway X-18R irons. I have got to say that they are great for those of us that are currently budget-minded. Thursday night, a Callaway rep visited our club with some stock for the pro shop and plenty of demos. I became very interested in the X-18R after he told me what they were selling for. I hit several shots with each and have to say I cannot tell any difference from the regular X-18s. I previously used X-16 Pros but had a lot of difficulty with the S300 shafts and the "heavy" heads. I think I am one of the few that actually like Callaway's Uniflex. I decided to go ahead and get a set, although I didn't get them at our pro shop. I had $100 in "score card points" from Dick's, so I got them for $299. No, they do not have S2H2 or bore thru hosel, but they are still great Callaway irons. I used them for 27 holes yesterday and 18 today, and they performed flawlessly with my problem swing. These would be great irons for the High/Mid or beginner that wants NEW quality namebrand irons without the price.

Oh yeah, I hit the Diablo driver and woods. I hated the driver and loved the woods. I'll post my opinions after I think I can be objective about it.

Glad you enjoy them. I recently got some X-22's on eBay for $380 new and they are amazing. I have heard the 18's and 22's are the best two in the X series.

You sure about this and how?? I thought there is not much differences between the x20's and x22's.

Yeah, if you search for reviews everyone has said the 22's are a major improvement over the 20's. They talk down on the 20's as if they are the biggest disappointment in the X series.

Either way I have never hit my irons so straight and so far as I do with the 22's

I have to look this up. Everyone tells me that there are not much difference between the x20 and x22. Not a huge difference as if it were x14's to x18's...etc...

Hello,

First post here.

Would you guys recommend these X-18R's for a total beginner? I want to buy a set of irons and I'm thinking about these. I can get them for about $315 total.

They felt good in my hands when I swung them in a store, and they seem priced right. I like that they come with a SW too. What do you guys think? I need some help :) I figured it would be better to invest in low priced quality clubs than an all-in-one set for about $300 at Dick's or something like that.

I paid $499 last year for my X18s. I've heard that the X18Rs are not as good as the X18. The Rs don't have the bore through hosel, but I doubt that I would notice the difference. I recommend the X18Rs.

Hello,

Yes, I would definately recommend them to a beginner or someone not wanting to spend a fortune on great irons. They are irons that you can start with and continue into the mid-handicap range without any problems. They do have a few differences from the original X-18 irons, particularly the lack of bore thru hosel and S2H2. Other than those visual differences, I can tell no difference in performance. I used a set of X-16 Pros for many years, and these out perform them. I was using Titleist 990s(cast muscleback blade type) and loved them. Over the past several months, I have only been able to play about twice a month and could no longer hit the Titleist consistently. The X-18Rs offer decent forgiveness that lets me enjoy my limited course time. For the price, I don't think they can be beat.

Im glad this thread just came up. I was at Dicks Sporting Goods tonight and saw they have these X18rs on sale. I am considering picking a set up and this is really the only thread that came up in the search.
