I've only played a couple times this year.. but I've seemed to form this nasty, low hook with my drives and long irons. The shots are low and hook way off making the next short physically & mentally harder, where as last year all my tee shots were high and would travel quite some distance.. My 6 and up irons hit nice and straight, but anything lower then a 6 its just hard to make a long straight shot. Coming back from the winter I've been trying not to kill the ball as much, but its not working out..

this ball flight started appearing for me a couple of weeks ago on the range. For me, I was coming up out of my spine angle. Just thought about keeping my butt sticking out while keeping my eye on the ball & knees flexed fixed 'er right up.

Check to see if your grip is too closed. If not, you maybe releasing too early, you should try to hold the wrist-cock angle a little longer but not to long because it will turn into a slice or push. Try to work on it slowly to get the feeling for it then hit some normal shots.

I had this problem reappear in my round today.

When I hit it good (too few) I had the sensation that I kept pulling through with my left hip for a long while. A delayed hit for sure.

Unfortunately, most of the time I was hitting with my hands too early. I play by feel mainly, so next range session I will try to work pulling through more with the left side.

I'm down to a 10 handicap. At this rate, I'll get to scratch at 90 years old!

Try to swing steeper (slightly) as opposed to around your body as much. Also, perhaps open your left foot a bit and above all else, be sure it is not closed. Ensure you are not closing the face of the club. A visual thing, but it can happen. I used to address the ball with a slightly open face, but I swore it was square. Someone pointed it out, they were right. Get some impact tape and check to see where the ball is actually striking the club face. Ensure you are hitting the center. For fun, try to slice the ball. Then work your way back to center. Just some things to try at least. Sounds like you have nothing to lose.

Interesting. Today on my bad shots I was hitting more toward the toe of the club than usual. I wondering if I am slipping into a setup issue of standing further from the ball?

I will check that too at the range.

It's really impossible to guess as to what's wrong. We've all been there, hitting the ball left or right and not sure why...

What usually works well for me is to start with my feet together and concentrate on maintaining posture and a good, straight left arm extension and on plane while hitting the ball. Once you get a good, solid swing that's straight - then start moving your feet apart slowly and bringing your body / turn back into it inch by inch. If you start noticing your hook again, think about what you're body is doing differently.

I went to the range today. Concentrated on standing closer to the ball. Was hitting it sweet. Harvey Pennick said it is hard to stand too close to the ball. This worked out fantastic in my case. I was able to really step into it, nice divots, a bit longer with more accuracy. I was able to "work under it" better on the downswing.

    • When does a 'non-conforming' club become just another piece of metal or plastic?
    • Day 353: mirror work again today. Working on the same stuff - wrist twist and shaft lean.
    • This is my second year playing golf, I started last season but have always struggled with a slice. I've tried multiple things to try and fix the slice: Closing the face. Rotating my right hand out or clockwise in the grip. Keeping the club head low in my back swing. Focusing on a straight swing path. Trying the straighter arms like Bryson D. (as seen in the videos above) Trying to not let me hips get too far ahead of my down swing. Trying to keep my shoulders down until after I've made contact with the ball. Etc. I recently changed to the straighter arms which has helped me adjust away from such a drastic slice. So it has helped a bit. Before that, I was trying to keep the club head low in the back swing and this was the most helpful in correcting the slice, however it drastically removed power and distance in the strikes and would even sometimes result in a hook. About a couple months ago I had a single lesson with my driver and learned some helpful things, but have since struggled to perform what I learned well. One of the things in the lesson was to keep my shoulder down more in the the down swing until after making contact with the ball. This would help the slice a bit, sometimes drawing the ball. To even it out, I was instructed to rotate my hips a bit earlier in the down swing. What I have noticed however with the earlier hip rotation is that it's really hurting my lower back a lot. Since backing off on that it's helped not injure my low back as much. I believe my main issue might possibly be the swing path, being a Pull Slice.   See above, was mid typing when you posted. I have never watched Moe Norman's swing to be honest. I have never measure my hip rotation, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on that after you read about my hip rotation / back pain issue.
    • Two questions… Are you trying to swing like Moe Norman? What's your hip turn like? Have you ever measured it?
    • I've been Playing Golf for: 2 years My current handicap index or average score is: 18 Index My typical ball flight is: Slice/Fade with a driver and FW. Generally straight with irons, varies some days left or right. The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: Driver slice. Videos:
