I have been told by my doctor that I will need hip replacement sometime within the next four months. Osteoarthritis in my right hip causes quite a bit of pain when I play golf. I also have trouble bending down to tie my right shoe.

I live in the Saint Augustine, Florida area and was wondering if anyone can recommend a high-reputable orthopedic surgeon. The orthopedic surgeon I have been going to up to now does not have a high rating (2.5 out of 5 from inputs from former patients).

Any recommendations would be helpful.

I'm sure there are some very reputable docs in the Jax area. I would call around and find out who the Ortho Doc is for the pro teams like the Jags up there and see if you can see that Doctor. If it's that important to you you might try Orlando too. Stryker and Zimmer make some great products, depending on your needs:

Here's an article about Jack and his hip replacement: http://www.nicklaus.com/nicklaus_news/news062205b.php If you have the cash and want Dr. James Andrews to do the procedure, here's his website: http://www.theandrewsinstitute.com/ He's the most renowned Ortho Doc in the sports world, and now has his office in Pensecola. He did the hip replacement for Jack, and also did work for the likes of Roger Clemens, Bo Jackson, Michael Jordan, Dwyane Wade and Drew Brees. Hope that helps!

Get advice from your personal physician. Otherwise, the world class hip replacement surgeon is Dr Rothman in Philadelphia. He is associated with a few Phila teaching Hospitals. Realizing you are in Florida, it can't hurt to request a referral for a Florida surgeon. Here is the site for the Rothman Institute:

In my opinion (from first hand knowledge), you are dealing with a very stressful situation so you have nothing to lose by sending an email to the institute for information.

I have had two hips replaced, most recently the right. Now there are two types of procedures, posterior and anterior. My most recent was the anterior. I chose this because no muscles were cut and the incession was smaller. I was playing golf in 5 weeks, but not with permission of my doctor. I found my doctor on the internet through the DePuy web site. I researched the various makers of replacement hips and had several appointments with physicians. Since my first replacement was with Depuy and I was happy with that procedure. Depending on your age (typically under 60), there is another possibility, which is "resurfacing" With that procedure the bone is not cut, but a new cap and cup are installed in the joint. There is a chat room for that procedure called "surface hippy". The members of that site really look down on Total Hip Replacements, thinking they are not the way to go. Use the manufacturers' web site because you can get much information and names of docs in your area.
Both of my hips are good now and I'm pain free. capeeps

I thank everyone for you input. My wife has convinced me to get a second opinion. So, I will be visiting the Mayo Clinic and talking with an orthopedic surgeon there.

    • I’d go with the Titleist if you liked the look of the blades but were suffering with distance. They should be a little more forgiving than a full blade and still retain some workability. Also remember to consider the shafts each have as this will be a big contributor to how they feel. Clemsonfan is right though… get fit or spend a bit of time on a launch monitor 🤙
    • Day 28: 2026.01.30 Managed to make time for a few swings out back today. Need a proper bit of range time this weekend.
    • Day 30, 1/30.  Six minutes this morning hitting a few more range balls, indoors, off a mat, into the net.  Did this before leaving the house.

    • Hi All my New Year’s resolution was to start playing golf again. I’ve caught the bug and am really enjoying hitting balls at a couple of my local ranges.looking forward to getting back out on courses in the spring. Based in the UK and 38 years old, I’ve been playing since I was a kid. Best handicap I’ve held is 2 in my mid 20s. Over the past 10 years I’ve played once or twice a year, sometimes with friends or for work. Could shoot 4-5 over, but just as easily shoot 15-20 over. I’ve moved to South Wales and am very lucky to be near some world class links courses, which gives me even more motivation to get playing again! I will start looking for a local coach in my area when I have more time to invest, but I recalled scouring this forum a few years ago and finding some good tips and advice so wanted to give it a try to see if there were any glaring issues I could fix in the meantime!  A few swings below… one from 1st week Jan and one from today. I have fixed my P1 takeaway to my liking and am now working on what I see as pretty severe early extension & hip thrust. Also terrible hip rotation. I’d like confirmation that this is indeed a problem and and suggestions on a few good drills. Thanks for reading 🙂 I've been Playing Golf for: 30+ years My current handicap index or average score is: 10ish over My typical ball flight is: mid The shot I hate or the "miss" I'm trying to reduce/eliminate is: push right with irons, hooks and push with driver!  Videos:
