I picked up a set of AP2's end of last year and was hitting them pretty descent but not getting the best results out of them. When I'm off my game I struggle hitting them solid consistently and I lose quite a bit of distance. I've been going around hitting 6 - 9 greens per 18 holes and it's getting real frustrating. I used Tommy Armour 845's for 10 years before I got the AP2's and I was very consistent with them ..

So.. off to the golf store last night and I tried a bunch of sets. I need +1" length, 2deg upright, and the store I frequent has about 15 sets in that configuration readily available.

I tried the Callaway X22's, Taylor Made R7, Wilson Staff DI 9, and a few others.

I was really blown away with the Wilson's. Yes they jack the lofts up big time, but I am a very high ball hitter, they had a great feel to them and were pleasing at address. I liked the fact that the set was 5iron - GW, with 3 wedges (P,A,G) .. and it came with a free hybrid. I got a wilson staff 3 hybrid to replace my 5 wood .. I had never hit a hybrid before and within minutes I was a believer .. I hit 10 solid straight shots in a row with it hitting them longer than I hit my 5 wood (5 wood: 225, hybrid: 225 - 235), with a lower ball flight.

So I picked up these irons .. and took them out to the course last night, I've got about 10 extra yards per club .. and really having those wedges is a nice idea.. I was hitting the PW about 145 .. AW - 135, GW - 125, and my Vokey SW goes about 110 ..

I plan on keeping my AP2's as I really like them, when my swing gets back in groove I'll go back to them and have the wilson's as fallback clubs.

First 9 holes I played with these wilson's last night I hit 8 greens and shot a 34, lol.

Why would you go back. 8 greens in 9 holes is terrific. Who cares if they are not "players" irons.

I picked up a set of AP2's end of last year and was hitting them pretty descent but not getting the best results out of them.

Same thing happened to me. I would hit my old 735cm's pretty well but it placed so much pressure on making dead solid contact. When I would be off for a round or two the scores shot up by 5 or so. Finally after shooting a 90 when I am hitting my drives, fairway woods, wedges well and putting pretty decent I just gave them up. I went out and replaced them with the AP1's and although I am still in the honeymoon phase I went out and shot a 41 at league last night simply by not worrying about what's going to go wrong with my irons. Maybe someday I'll make solid consistant contact to warrant something like a AP2 set but for now I'll just settle for practicaly doubling my greens in reg.

Great idea going to a more forgiving iron. Im trying the same thing(going from my blades to TM TPs) and i hope it works as well for me.

    • Can be out and up a little more. Not quite over-done yet.
    • Down the line and face on from today. Still feeling like I’m sticking the club into a hole in the ceiling above my right shoulder and then big loop inside to start downswing. That’s how it feels. Not how it looks though! Gotta keep working on this for a bit but I see a lot of progress. 😁
    • Day 5 (13 Mar 26) - Friday shootout cancelled- made it a practice round working from mixed tees. Plenty of up and down work around greens.  Best was a hole out birdie on the par 3 #5 hole - nice pitch and roll w/Pw from about 10yds off the green - dead center flagstick drop.  Much of round was focused on getting solid weight shift into lead foot.
    • Day 208 3-13 Worked on wrist arching and flow. First time hitting reall balls at a range in months. It was nice to see ball flight. Still not sure it beats my backyard practice station.
    • Three hole match - microphones on in the cart. It's fascinating listening to them talk about their shots and how they play them. I'm not normally a huge fan of the TM videos - they seem forced to me - but this one doesn't. It's also fun seeing their competitiveness over what on the face of it is a fairly meaningless 3 holes, but they can't help themselves.
