Hi again,
Thanks for all your replies for my "workable and forgiving irons" thread. I'm glad I found this forum and you wonderful fellow golfers. I see tons of posts about Mizuno irons and many of you use them. I am like many, who doesn't like all the colorful irons with logos, etc. I like a traditional look, mainly forged. Yet, as I also stated in that thread, I only golf once or, twice if I am lucky, monthly and do not have time to work on my game, and haven't broken 100 yet. You all rave about the MX200s, yet I do not like the blue color. And if I go for the MX-19s, since Mizuno doesn't make them, I would pay the price of the irons, plus the fitting, plus the new longer shafts. My question is...... would I be able to use one of their MP series irons, without suffering too much until getting used to them? Obviously I would hit them in the shop and monitor my shots. I know it's not 100% the same, but with my skiing, I purchased a more aggressive, higher level skis than I am supposed to use, to learn and get used to them. This way as I progressed, didn't have to buy them later on, spending money I don't have. As much as I am ok with the Cobra S9s, I really like the look of the Mizunos.

I would say forget about the looks of the club. You can't see the blue at adress so why worry about it? If you only play 1 or 2 times a month and don't practice much, you won't be improving enough to take advantage of a players iron. I would rather have ugly clubs and have fun on the golf course, than having some beautiful clubs that I hate because I can't hit them.

But as always, buy what YOU want!

I don't think you would suffer from the MP irons. I've got the MP32's and while they are technically "blades," they are nowhere near as unforgiving as some blades of the past. I think Mizuno even has some newer blades with a small cavity and cut muscle in the back combined for greater playability.

Mine are new and have punished me for a swing fault I had/have. They do not like being missed by much and do not perform well at all on bad swings. I am not sure about the mp-52s. I do not know how much forgiving they are than mine. But with mine, I would not recommend if you are not hitting the sweet spot or close to it consistantly. I would think something more forgiving would be a better option then upgrade later.

I would look at the old mx-25. I bet you could get a good deal on them on ebay and they do not have the blue.

I agree, I think the MP57 might be a good option.

Yeah, wanna make 14 dollars the hard way?

Try to find a set of MX-23 irons. They are technically a 'game improvement iron', but are conservative looking and are closer to a blade than most GI irons. The MX-25 is the followup to them and those are also OK, although I didn't like them as well. The MX-200 is the next in that line. If you really want closer to a 'player iron', check out the MP-60's. They are a slight cavity back, so they are more forgiving than many but are still very workabout and of course have that awesome Mizuno feel. You can probably find them fairly cheap used somewhere like eBay. For newer sets The MP-52's are probably the most forgiving 'player irons' Mizuno has ever made followed by the MP-57 (which is very similar to the MP-60's).

I love my MP-57's. I'm coming close to owning them for a year now, and I don't think I would trade them for any other set. They are just as forgiving as I want them to be, but I can hit a cut and a draw with them. They are pretty awesome.

I think youd be fine with MP-52s. They are still very much a cavity-back and should be fairly easy to hit.
They wont be as forgiving as MX-200s, but if you dont like the looks of the MX-200s but want something that will be forgiving, the MP-52s are your next best option.

As far as the MX-200s go, I don't like the blue either. But you know what, I love my MX-200s. Great feeling, forgiving and don't let anyone tell you that you can't work these if need be. Frankly, if most of us could hit it straight, we'd be lower handicaps by now.

Do you think the 52's will give him as much enjoyment as the 200's while only playing 2x per month and not practicing?

I am in the same position as you. I love the mizuno irons, but i am swayed away from the mx200s because i think they are too much like my big berthas in terms of head size, so i wouldn't warrant the change. But with the mp52s,m they have a thin top line which looks good at address, but also they are fairly thick underneath, and they have a cavity back so i think they will be really forgiving. They are meant to be the most playable mp irons ever.

Anyone have any opinions on what i should buy?

I think the mx200 would be better for you, and they are cheaper. also, you have a handicap where you need a thicker iron anyway to enjoy hitting good shots. Try the wilson range of irons, they have a thin top line, and they aren't too expensive

If I'm not mistaken, the blue is just a sticker. You could do what this guy did and take them off, I'm sure they're just there for cosmetics.

I would just get the MP-57's I got them a year ago when I was only a 10 handicap, and they really pushed me to sharpen my iron play. I hit the 52s and personally did not like them very much. The guy from my golf shop said everyone hits the mizuno irons and just falls in love with the MP-57's... I can't disagree.

I play in the 90's, usually mid to high. About a month ago I traded my TM Burner Plus irons for a set of 57's and don't regret it one bit; probably one of the best decisions I've made. I may be the exception instead of the rule but my mis-hits aren't any worse than with the TM's. The 57's seem to have made my game more consistent. My highs and lows are much closer to my average score than with the other clubs. It probably took me about 2 months to decide to trade. Everything I had read said the 57's were players irons. I'm sure glad I decided to go against everything I read and go with what I liked.

I agree....I love my MX25's and are cheap on eBay. But the mx200's are great clubs if you can get over the Blue sticker, which doesn't bother me.

Sounds as though the 57's are a hit too.?

Wow didn't expect that, i though the MP52s were pretty much the perfect club! so what was it that the 57s had over the 52s?

    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
    • Day 1 - 2025-12-20 Starting a new streak, of at least 1. With rain dumping for the next week in the north bay area, I'll be a lot of outdoor net work and maybe some putting. About 10 minutes of 7 iron work, focused on the usuals: weight transfer, keeping hands behind me. I'll have more time in the coming days for video review and maybe some Hack Motion.
