Hello all! Nice to be back on the boards.

Here is my issue...any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

My iron play used to be the best part of my game. My driver was banana city. With practice, i've pretty much cured the driver slice. I can hit right to left pretty good now. Here's what I did to fix it:

1. Right elbow tucked in to side on downswing.
2. Square up the club face by slightly rolling right hand over left on impact. (Shake hands with the target)

Now I'm chunking the heck out of my irons...really bad.

Please help.

I had the same problems and fixed my slice the same way...AND I also started chunking my irons from time to time. The reason I was chunking was because I was getting my lower body and weight through well but leaving my arms and club behind so I could come from the inside more. If you just slow everything down a bit and work on your tempo and timing between top and bottom you'll figure it out. Hope that makes sense and helps...Good Luck

I battled a wicked slice for a long time. A few months ago I finally "fixed it" but I did so in a bad way. I started using my hands (a really strong right hand) to "flip" the club through impact (a.k.a. "scooping").

I bet you have done exactly what I did.

It worked to cure my slice, but it made me lose a lot of swing speed and I started chunking the ball a lot and hitting these low hooks.

Now I'm trying to unlearn all of that... keeping my hands free and relaxed, lagging the club and rotating through impact... much better.

Yes, I did what you did. However, I don't think this is all bad. You squared up the club head, which is good. I think after practice, you (and I) will eventually have a natural feeling swing that won't feel like a "scoop". My slice was so bad that I basically tried to learn how to hook the ball. At first it did feel like a "scoop". However, I've gradually transitioned more to a slight "roll"...it's starting to feel more natural.

Check out Kenny Perry's swing. He looks like he rolls through the ball...I could be wrong.

At any rate, i've gotta figure out my iron chunking now :(

Thanks for the posts everyone.

Look at Kenny's club head right at (and after) impact. It turns to the left slightly. This will produce a right to left ball flight...

His hips move forward quite a bit while holding his right foot planted for so long. Something to play with at the range.

It's doesn't matter what it "feels like." You need to look at video of your swing. If you aren't rotating your body through the ball, maintaining club head lag and a flat left wrist, you are hurting your game. Trust me, since I've corrected this I've added two club lengths worth of distance (i.e. now I hit my 8 iron from 150 yards where I used to hit my 6 iron).

Kenny Perry does not appear to be scooping at all. There is a big difference between flipping the club through with your wrists (scooping) and simply squaring the club face at impact. Thanks. I see what your talking about from the images. I think the 49 image is an extreme case of what i'm talking about. I only mean a "slight" roll of the right wrist over the left. Regarding my rotation and club head lag, i'll work on this and perhaps it's the source of my chunking...thanks for the advice.

    • Day 446 - 2025-12-20 Woke up early and got some swings in before teaching putting all day. Looking forward to doing the same tomorrow.
    • It's miles better, though.
    • Went up to Erie for a lesson. I still need to work on how I shift my weight into my right leg and turn into the right leg. I extend it too much and externally rotate it too much. That all causes me to over rotate the hips and cause weight shift issues in the downswing. I need to feel like my right leg gains flex (it doesn’t), and my knee cap faces forward. The right hip sinks back and right. I need a need a ton more internal rotation. I still have some right elbow issues in the backswing. The path is better, but too much right elbow bend. I need to maintain width in the right elbow and let my right shoulder retract more, let’s say at A3, which helps keep that right arm extended.
    • Day 130 12-20 Today was just swinging what i had and go from there. Did focus on getting to lead side. Recorded swings for lesson  and hit real balls.
