I will be going to Chicago on Monday to Thursday and I'm looking to play some golf! :)

My brother lives right off Logan Square in Chicago and any course recommendations would be great. For reference, he's a beginner, so I am thinking one of the Chicago public courses and maybe a nicer one. I think I may have the opportunity to actually play 3-4 courses (arrive Monday morning, leave Thu. Night)...

I have the Golf Digest best in State (Public) list here:
1. Cog hill Golf & Country Club, Lemont, IL
2. TPC Deere Run, Silvis, IL
3. Bull Valley Golf Course, Woodstock, IL
4. The Glen Club, Glenview, IL
5. WeaverRidge Golf Club, Peoria, IL
6. Cantigny Golf Club, Wheaton, IL
7. Chalet Hills Golf Club, Cary, IL
8. The general at Eagle Ridge, Galena, IL

I will be looking into that a bit more (distance from Logan Square is somewhat of a priority as well)

Also Golf Magazine had a "Chicago issue" a few months ago and this is it:
1. Orchard Valley Golf Club,
$53-$76, 6,745 yards Par 72

2. Heritage Bluffs Golf Club
$34-$63, 7,171 yards Par 72

3. George W. Dunne National (Listed Above)

4. Cantigny (Listed Above)
$85-$107, 7,004 yards Par 72

5. Harborside International (Port)
$82-$95, 7,164 yards Par 72

6. Pine Meadow Golf Club
$79-$100, 7,238 yards Par 72

7. The Glen Club
$132-$177, 7,149 yards Par 72

8. Cog Hill No.4 (Listed Above)
$150, 7,386 yards Par 71

9. Ruffled Feathers Golf Club
$125, 6,898 yards Par 72

So again, looking for any recommendations/experiences from golf courses and please feel free to list any courses that you'd recommend. Thanks!

Used to live in chicago (lincoln park); my favorite public course by far is Pine Meadows. In terms of your location, Winnetka and Wilmette are both good muni tracks at the next price level down. Let me know if you have any more specific questions, I have played all courses on your list except Galena.

heritage bluffs in channahon (my best friend's home course, also played there alot during high school) is my second-favorite layout that i've played apart from Blackberry Oaks, just north of Sandwich, IL

I'm late to this thread, but if you'd like my (limited) view on courses in the area (especially ones i've played, never played cantigny, cog hill, or most of the other high $$$ courses), just send me over a PM, and i'll happily toss you a phone # or email to contact me at.

by the way, i live in lincoln park in chicago. if you'd like to meet up to golf a few, i'd be more than happy (if you can deal with my 20 HDCP play :D )

Goals: Correct slice on driver/long clubs(close!), work on consistent iron distance, practice aiming irons

Aschaefer: I too live in Chicago, Albany Park. I used to work at St Joseph Hospital there in Lincoln Park. Where do you play? I'm looking to find some people for semi-regular play, if you're interested.

    • Day 120 - Played 18; much better than yesterday. Miss right now is off the heel of the club, so I need to sort that out.
    • Today we played Pease Golf Course in Portsmouth, NH. Course was in great shape but my game didn't show up. I will say I pitched and chipped fairly well but almost everything else was very hit or miss. Cost myself a lot hitting an in play drive with pulling my approach shots maybe 85% of the time. Finally figured out I had been swaying most of the round. Only took me until 13 to figure it out. Used what felt like a much more centered turn and the ballstriking improved. 18 tomorrow using a 2 man scramble format. Just looking to contribute. Been a blast though.
    • Day 22: Hit balls with 7-iron using mevo+ to track dispersion. Was out for a long time after work; 86 balls but the first 50+ were 50% swings focusing on top of backswing feel and then just hitting the ball as a psychic reward. Finished with 20 balls close to full speed. Pretty happy with dispersion and also no horrendous misses. I’m chunking my priority piece out into two separate feels, first and more important is the position/balance at top of backswing which is what I was working on. Once I have that engrained I’ll move to transition part.
    • FWIW I never really had issues with the previous generation of Snells. But… I'm not sure I played them a ton, either.
    • I know Dean Snell designed the original Pro V along with a couple of other brands tour balls.  How exactly does the Snell ball have problems.  Did he change something in the design or is a manufacturing error since he cannot afford the unlimited R&D budgets of the big manufacturers to iron out flaws
