I am going to order some cobra s9 II irons and need a little help determining which shaft to get, stiff or regular. I know my swing speed is in the low to mid 70's with a 6 iron but dont know what it is with my driver, when I get good contact or good swing with my driver I hit it about 200-220, I am 27 and athletic if thats has to do with anything. So which would suit me better stiff or regular? Also have only been playing for 2 months.

The way things are at the moment you

almost certainly need regular - but what you need to bear in mind is that shaft choice isn't only about swing speed. Do you hit the ball high, or struggle to get it off the deck? The type of shaft and it's kick point can be a factor. Do you want graphite shafted clubs, to reduce the clubs overall swing weight and increase your swing speed and thus the flight distance, or do you prefer the control and more positive feedback from a steel shafted club? I know when I started I used a very cheap starter set. I actually got on with them pretty well. If I'd have stayed with them I'd have been a better player now. What happened instead was that someone gave me a top line set, that was hugely expensive, but unfortunately didn't suit me at all. I didn't really appreciate that, because I didn't know enough clubs or about my own game. I spent years hitting the ball way too high and without any level of accuracy, at least partially because the club shafts were too whippy and promoted a high ball flight when I had absolutely no problem putting the ball in the air and my quick swing meant I couldn't control a reg-flex shaft. It's only now that I'm finally putting together a set that really suits me. After only two months playing the game, can you be sure what sort of swing and what sort of game that you're likely to have in a year, or two years? I bet you'll be swinging differently, and I bet you'll want different shafts in your clubs. Are you okay about going with the expense of re-shafting them when your swing and therefore your game improves? I think, personally, that it's too early in your golfing career to be spending a lot of money on equipment. I would be holding onto your golfing fund until you find your swing, and know how you are going to be playing going forward. If I had my time again, and knowing what I know now, what I would do would be to go and get fitted so that you know what sort of shafts you need (material, flex, kick point, length), what sort of lie (upright, flat, or whatever), and the grip size that best suits your hand. Then I would go to ebay and buy a cheap second hand set (or half set) with that setup. Ping are good sets for this, because they are graded and colour coded for different lies. I'd see how I get on with those while my game developed, and not be too disappointed if I had to buy new clubs soon-ish. I went down this sort of approach for the set that I have put together this season. I paid about a third of the price for last years model club (my S58's), and because of the ping colour coding my clubs fit me off the shelf (I just bought a set with the lie colour code, and the shafts, that I needed). I'm very happy with them. You might want to consider an interim measure along these lines rather than blowing all your cash on clubs that pretty soon might not work for you.

I agree with the previous poster that there is more too it than Swing speed, but if you have to "pick one" my suggestion for you:

I would start out with stiff shaft. I tried the regular flex at your age and did not have too much success. I would also try out the TM irons out. I played with a set in the Carribean and they were real soft and flew. I own Callaway irons and the next set will either be Taylor Made or Cobra's. Drivers; I just bought last years R7 Limited and I can actually tell you this club is stright and the weight tech really works nice.

go with a regular flex with those number i swing my driver a 105 and i still use regular flex in the irons with a 7 iron swing of 87 90 i should be in stiff but regulars work well and you will defiantly be fine with them

If your gonna spend big money on clubs, get fitted! Its that simple. You'll see a tremendous difference. I have fitted pings, and couldnt be happier. I needed stiff, but im hitting a 3w out past 220 yards. Im also tall, lage and strong though.

Damn I cant wait to play again, stupid burned leg.

same here. regular flex. my 6 iron SS is in the mid-high 70's and i was fitted for R400's. i was using S300's and since i switched i have gained about 1/2 club distance-wise per iron
