Tired of hitting off of mats that are rock hard? I came up with a quick-and-dirty idea to add a little spring/give.

Get a Rubbermaid Roughneck storage container (here is a picture, but they come in different sizes.)

The only part you will need is the TOP (note the top is indented.) Place the top upside down on the ground. Lay a golf mat (or piece of astroturf) over it. Your done! When you put a ball on top you have (from top to bottom):

ball
astroturf
thin layer of plastic (the top)
1/2 inch of air
ground

If you "take a divot" and hit down on the ball, the top gives (allowing you to hit through the ball) then returns back to its old level.

Take too big a "divot" and you hit the ground (and get that same old ouch you get with hitting off a regular mat.)

That's a creative and workable idea. Another thing to consider is how much higher the hitting surface will be off the ground. You may need to place down a mat or board to stand on so the surface will be level with your feet.

I was using a hitting mat indoors to work on brushing the surface (simulating a divot) and found I had to stand on a board used for a shelf to allow myself to be positioned level with the mat.

2011 Goals:
* Improve club-head speed to 90 mph with the driver
* Ensure increased speed does not compromise accuracy
* Prevent overextending on the back-swing (left-arm is bending too much at the top)
* Relax arms initially at address ( too tense)* Play more full rounds (failed from 2010)
