Help!

I am 6 feet tall with a swing speed of 115 and the ball comes off the club face at about 155-160---control is not a problem

I recently bought a Nicklaus driver with 9.5 degree loft and Fujikura SG Pro 2.01 Tour Staff. I was driving the ball about 330-340 yards on average (a lot was roll--had a launch angle of 7-10 degrees) but it was one of the first titanium drivers I tried. I figured if I could hit that far with a Nicklaus if I went with a better product (Talyor made) and had it custom fit I could drive even farther. When I went they told me my launch angle was only about 7-10 degrees and they set me up with an R7 10.5 degree with a V2 (mid kickpoint) shaft (gave me a launch angle of 12 degrees and spin of 3000). However, I may have gotten an extra 5 yards carry but I have lost 50 yards roll (Goes 280-290 and stops) !! I am upset and want to redesign a driver and was thinking about going back and sticking with the V2 shaft to get the ball up quicker and trying an 8.5 degree with an extra inch. However, I have now opened up a can of worms and just want to get the longest distance possible (including roll) with my next purchase. I cannot really see the differance until I get to a course and compare (once roll is done) and by that time it is too late

I know I was getting more roll from a lower launch angle but was it due more to the degree of the club or the shaft?
If it was more the angle of the clubhead do you think an 8.5 degree with the V2 shaft would work best?, or would I be better going with a 9.5 degree with a lower kickpoint
Also the Fujikura is 72 grams and the V2 is 65 does that make a difference?

I have no idea with so many variables what I should do and all the people at the golf shops are able to help me with or think I am talking about distance is carry distance not total distance. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me

It is difficult to find the right combination of design, loft and shaft to optimize your driver performance. If you were hitting it 330-340 why did you change equipment? I beat a lot of guys who are really proud of their 300+ driving distance and I only hit it about 270-280 off the tee. If you could hit it straight 330 with your old driver then you are getting a life lesson from Old Scratch himself. Don't get too greedy.

Try new things, but be prepared to go back to what you had.

Not to be too sarcastic, but what courses are you playing where 330 yards is not long enough? Further, what courses are you playing where 290 isn't far enough?

Phil, is that you?

50 yards of roll is an unacheiveable number unless you're playing every hole at a 45* downward angle or on airport runways . . .

Maximize your carry and forget about roll. Roll is unpredictable and gets you through fairways and into bunkers.

I'd guarantee you that if you could give tour players a magic club that would get them 290 yards off the tee every time and roll no more than a yard 9 out of 10 would take it.

    • What's the rest of that story? Where was the ball going?
    • The criticisms are starting already 🤣 U.S. Open pro criticizes Shinnecock green conditions: 'Bumpy' After playing his first practice round at the 2026 U.S. Open, Michael Kim offered a less-than-glowing review of Shinnecock's "bumpy" greens.   The sand, I don't care about that. If the greens didn't come back as well for latest aerification, that would be a bit of a blunder on Shinnecock I think.
    • Well, if your frame of reference spins twice during the swing, then Bryson's ab/adduction is more like 780 degrees so there! (Yes I'm being silly, but not sure it's any sillier than what your pal Andy is doing...)
    • Update: Brandon Sorsby has decided to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft. He will not play for Texas Tech in the upcoming season.  From my perspective, I think he did the right thing. I hope he gets the correct help for his gambling addiction. I say the right thing, because I would be worried that the stress from all of this now and throughout the entire year would not be beneficial towards his mental health.  If an NFL team picks him up, then there really isn't any pressure for him to play immediately. He can work on himself and his game for the NFL.  From Texas Tech,  "Texas Tech will continue to provide the support and recovery resources Brendan requires on this journey. Furthermore, Texas Tech will not seek return of any amounts already paid to Brendan through his NIL agreements with the University," Campbell wrote. "We wish our best to Brendan, and we offer our prayers to him and his family as he chases his dreams at the next level. This has been an unbelievably painful experience for us all, but I know that his true, underlying character and lessons learned through this experience will ultimately bring him great success on the field of play and in life." Which, I also the right thing to do.
