After reading through posts on this board, this is actually against the rules. When losing a ball you have to hit your next shot from the place you lost the previous ball.

You know what though, there is a thing called pace of play. Most of us play on very public courses that are overbooked and already full of plenty of slow hacks. So expecting to search for a ball for 5 minutes, not finding it and then going back to hit a new one is outlandish. I'd definitely have something to say to someone playing in front of me that did that under those conditions.

We don't have a lot of the services pros and country club members have. They have ball spotters, crowds, caddies and others to identify and locate a shot. We have ourselves. It's a different story. So if it's busy an you don't want to take 5 minutes to find a ball (please don't) then I see nothing wrong with honestly dropping 1 where you think yours went (and others would agree) and playing it without penalty. A lot of times roughs have little white flowers or some dandelions that make it hard to locate a ball. They often have leaves that the ball goes under. And since no one is close to the drop zone it becomes hard to find a ball in 2 minutes. With a spotter, caddy and w/e you would definitely get this ball. But with just you your odds go down. So why should only the privileged get to not lose a stroke?

Unless it's "you should play a provisional next time," just about anything else you might say would be contrary to the rules of golf. He's not only entitled to go back to the tee to hit again, but he's required to.

Yeah, those dastardly "country clubbers," what with their non-existent caddies (seriously, caddies exist at like 15 clubs in the country anymore) and, oh wait, what other advantages did they have again?

--------- This (dropping where you think a ball is, hitting provisionals, playing 100% by the rules or not) has been discussed several times before. Contribute to one of those threads - that isn't the topic here.
