Anybody experience with shoulder pain? right shoulder, It painful when I tried to lift my arm above my shoulder. I went on the internet and they said you have four tendons that help the mobility of your arm, and recommend icing every 15 minutes and remove for 15 minutes for the next 2-3 days and slowly stretch and use light weights to work it back to recovery.

Anybody experience shoulder pain?
What did you do to treat?
How long before you can play golf?
Does it recure again once you had this?

Thanks,

Hi,
I am having a history with shoulder pain.

It started with a skiing accident and I fell on my shoulder.
Result was that I could not lift my arm above shoulder height using the muscels of this arm. I had to use my other arm to pick the right arm and put the hand on my head (to wash my hair )

For me it is 'impingement syndrome'. There is not enough room between the extended collar bone and the shoulder joint, so that the supraspinatus tendon cannot move freely within this gap.

This can happen when there is a swelling or inflammation of the tissue there. Then the gap gets to narrow, and when the muscles flex the tendons scratch at the bone, and this hurts.

What needs to be done is to get rid of the swelling/inflammation, so that the tendon can freely move within the gap.
What happened to me, is that the inflammation became chronical and I would need a surgery to scrape of a bit of shoulder bone, so that the gap gets wider.

Icing can never hurt. If it is an inflammation this is the way to go (aside from medication). But working the muscles might not necessary be the best thing, depending on what your problem is.

Hi,

I had this same problem corrected proabably 9 or so years ago after no progress after three months of 3x per week PT. "Subacromial Decompression" I believe was the name of the procedure. It was done arthroscopically, and I was back in action in about two weeks time. There was some pain in the healing, but it subsided fairly quickly. I was hesitant to have it done, but I'm really glad I did it. The temporary pain and discomfort from the procedure was well worth the benefit of having my range of motion and shoulder strength(most of it, anyway) back. Physical scars are almost non-existant. I had three tiny incisions with one stitch each. Post-op pain control was Vicodin, but I only took it for a day. It really didn't hurt bad enough for me to want to put up with the Vicodin side effects. If therapy doesn't help you, you can move forward to that procedure with a high degree of confidence in being fixed up pretty well. Good luck with whatever course of treatment you pursue.

See a doctor.

There are a whole bunch of different things it can be, from a simple muscle pull to tendon damage. The treatment and severity changes depending on what is hurt. If it turns out to be a muscle pull, you probably won't do much more damage icing it and trying to use weights. If it's something more serious, you can make it much worse.

When I was a personal trainer, we saw people all the time who ended up spending thousands of dollars to rehab joints that they hurt and ignored. Most likely it's minor, but especially if you have decent health insurance, it's worth it to get a pro to look at it.

Use the accronym R.I.C.E........Rest.....Ice.....Compression....Elevation. In this order. About 15 minutes each phase. for rehibilation purposes, try swimming. Water resistance is great for repairing and strengthening injuries/muscles. Good luck!
