Just hit the i15 irons at a demo day and have to say they are some of the sweetest irons i have hit. They look much better in person than they do in the pics. I loved the fact that that its a transition set its exactly what i have been looking for the long irons actually looked similar to the G15 in the bag (there were about 20 - 30 irons in the demo bag) but the short irons were nice and compact. Didnt notice any distance gain over my CG golds but they did feel very solid but most importantly gave good feedback on mishits. Anyone in the 10 - 20 cap range (possibly as low as 5) looking for new irons should give them a try.
Now all i have to do is justify replacing my 2 year old irons with brand new ones, excuses anyone?

Have you by chance hit i10's? Wondering how much difference there is with the new i15. I hit some i10 irons and thought they were really nice. Not real mushy soft, but solid.

I hit the I15 irons today at an indoor Ping demo day.

This past winter, I had really considered the I10 and S57 irons when I was looking to replace clubs, and tested them twice against the Callaway X20-X22family.

The I10 was a good iron, and I could work the ball easily, but it didn't feel as clean on impact as the X20 offerings. (S57 felt great, but I don't have the swing for it).

The I15 7-iron felt crisper than the I10. This test club was 1* upright and a half inch longer shaft, (I'm standard lie and length), but seemed to work OK as long as I swang smoothly. Test club shaft was AWT regular.

As for feel and design, the I15 had elements of both the I10 and the S57. I15 is billed as a progressive set, seeking what the mixed Ping I3 sets offered back about the year 2000. Some golfers ordered the I3 with oversized heads in 3-6, and I3 blade heads for 7 on up.

The local Golf Galaxy pro took time to show me side-by-sides of 3-irons and 7-irons from the I10, I15, G10 and G15 sets.

The I15 3-iron has a narrower sole and clubface than the G15, but still larger than the S57. The I15 clubheads get smaller as you work your way to the short irons, and the 8 and 9 are of similar size to the S57.

Also, the I15 incorporates the tungsten toe weight like the S57. Curiously the I15 has slightly more offset and slightly less bounce than the I10.

Would want to take the I15s on a two day playing test before I would consider switching. One problem I have - a good one - is golfdom has created quite a few really good iron models the last couple of years. It's hard to settle on just one.

For right now, my X20s are fine - as long as I swing them properly.

(If you have a copy of the Ping 2008 product booklet, you can pull the I15 specs offline and compare the I10 and I15 in detail).

I hit both the i15 and the S57 on Friday at Golf Galaxy during the demo day. I thought they were both terribly ugly. Performance wise, the i15 was very forgiving and the s57 felt okay but I didn't like the weighting and could not get used to that black plastic mustache glued to the back of the club. Neither club felt as solid as my MP-14s, let alone my MacGregors. I think Bridgestone and Mizuno (i.e. Mp-57) have better offerings right now, then again I prefer forged, not cast irons. I didn't hit the woods. I think Ping needs to get back to their roots, ala the Eye 2. My father is still playing a set of BeCu Eye 2s that I sold him years ago. Those were good game improvement irons.

    • I caught a video on this driver; the face tech seems crazy. Looking at the heat map for ball speed, hitting it basically anywhere on the face only loses a few percent ball speed. The surprising and counter intuitive part to me was that for flat faced clubs, ball speed loss is directly proportional to distance loss. For clubs with bulge and roll this is apparently not true. The surprising part of that story being that the max distance potential looks to be a tiny pee sized area for this driver, and I feel in general for drivers. The counter intuitive part being (the myth?) that blade irons have a pee sized sweet spot and missing that tiny spot causes dramatic losses. And that modern drivers, maybe 2017 on, have massive sweet spots and are ultra forgiving. Where in reality, if this heat map data is valid and reliable, it might be a bit of the opposite. This insane tech driver appears to have a pea sized "sweet spot" while Mizuno Pro 241 irons are 28% more forgiving compared to the average of all clubs measured. Not compared to other players irons, compared to all clubs from all categories, players to SGI! The Pro 241 being essentially just a solid chunk of metal with no "tech" at all. Which for me devolves into a whole mess of what is forgiveness really? And in measurable and quantifiable results how many yards, or feet, does that translate into?
