Mosquito Repellant?

For those of you who tend to be eaten alive by mosquitos if you don't use a repellent, what (non-DEET) formulation have you found to be most effective?

Even if a course has used an insecticide in ponds and on fairways, by God they sure as heck seem to find me once I make a sidetrip into the woods...

I'll tell you that i have tried every type of repellent out there and I still get bit to high hell. The one thing I havent tried that I just saw on tv was that silly clip on scent device that has a little fan blowing out some form repellent. I dont think its meant to clip on to a person, but at this point i'll try anything. I can be with a group of six and while we are waiting at the tee box all the mosquitos will attack me and leave the rest of the guys alone.

Funny how if one doesn't look too close, your avatar looks like a mosquito perched on skin drinking away. Maybe you're subconsciously throwing off a mental invitation to the little buggers?

DEET is the only effective means of repelling mosquitos.

GARLIC!!! If you don't cook with/eat regularly, pills are available in the vitimin section, it's not only good for you, it will keep those blood suckers away. And no, the pills do not taste like garlic so your breath will not offend.

I have tried EVERYTHING and an older lady at Church told me to give this stuff a try!!! Well I still get some bites here and there BUT its about 90% better.

PS: The stuff will make you think of your grandmother with its smell hehehe

I like non-DEET formulations due to chemistry preferences in substances applied topically to the skin - however I have less concern about it when applied to clothing.

In prior years the best DEET complemented solution I ever used was Muskol (from Canada) and that now comes in both aerosol as well as a straight fluid/lotion. It's in my bag but probably lost a lot of it's power due to age and have wondered about how the non-DEET variants are performing in the field. Buzz-Away ain't bad - but proved ineffective when I was working in the yard after a very heavy rainfall a week or so earlier - I had over 10 bites on my head alone after liberal dosing with the Buzz-Away.

Recently I came across some nutritional info which indicated consumption of vitamin B1 (100 mg I think) would help reduce one's attractiveness to the critters - so I have started on a daily B-100 complex supplement regimen to hopefully reduce my radar signature although I didn't find it to be a quick fix. Drat.

However, I'll give the Corn Huskers a try (Dad used it regularly years ago for dry skin) and really ---- let's get DDT back on the market!!

Hmm... that's possible. Although garlic (even if deodorized) may be somewhat neuro-toxic, so I'm not quite ready to pursue that option just yet. You are right though, I have found it in recipes for gardeners to use as an organic pesticide as well. Potent stuff.
