After watching another yet another standard medal play event I have become nostalgic for the days of the International when the players played a modified Stableford scoring system. The PGA tour only has one event (match play) that has a different format. We either need more match play or a team event or something that would distinguish an event from the rest. If I were the chairman of the Deere or some other lesser event I would institute Stableford to create some buzz.

I'd like to see more match play.

I would love to see the PGA championship go back to match play. It is kind of the odd child as far as the 4 majors go and was match play until like 1958 or somewhere around there. This would distinguish it from the others. Make is the same format as the us amateur. 36 holes qualifying for 64 spots. it would give a club pro or two a chance to make it through some rounds of match play and really compete. The downside is you may end up with a less than disireable matchup on sunday which would hurt ratings but what would be better than and tiger phil head to head battle for a major.

I totally agree.

I actually sometimes feel like the majors should all have their own distinguishing factors that make them "Major" Seems like instead of going that route, it's been more of "How absolutely difficult can we make this golf course play?" Not really a fan of that anymore.

I'd personally like to see it but unfortunately the reality of the day is TV coverage. And not just the finals matchup, in stroke play, the camera can move to several groupings when the leaders are between shots - in matchplay there is too much dead air for their liking. And as you mentioned, if Tiger is out of it early (like more than a couple Accenture Match Play events) - the TV rankings tank.

Maybe if would be pretty neat to have a five-round PGA. The first with 256 players do or die stroke play round with the top 128 making match play. There might be a lot of interest to see whether some touring pros make the cut or not. And in a single round of golf, anything can happen. This could be followed by two rounds of Match play of 128 players. This also might be neat to see club pros matched up against touring pros. And then the final two rounds stroke play with the top 32 participating. One weakness to this would be that bad weather could really play havoc on a five round tournament. Still, it would be a rather unique format and I'm also of the opinion that the PGA is the weak step-sister to the other majors.

I second that nomination. This cup was one of the first time I was able to watch a bit of match play for more than a few holes. I love the strategic element hole by hole and then overall for the match. It makes for some very exciting golf when one bad shot can cost you a hole that you might not be able to get back easily. Even the 4-5 foot 'gimmes' become more pressure filled and challenging.

I too would love to see some more match play. Match play is a huge part of golf in the grand scale. So in my mind, if these guys are professional golfers, they should have to play a proportionate amount of match play. I'd just like to see the gap between what they do and what the rest of us do narrowed a little.
It didn't occur to me until now but, how many match-play events are there on the LPGA tour? They might sprinkle in a few to add some interest. Worth a shot IMO.

I don't they do a lot of match play because Geoff Ogilvy would win them all
