I just got back from my first lesson at golf galaxy ( which was amazing) and as i walked to my car i had a thougt. "was i supposed to tip him?" . so my question is, is it the normal thing to do whenever you get a lesson is to tip the instructor?

I used to get my lessons from a golf pro at a course. I went to him for many years, so he would give me lessons at a pretty reduced rate. He would teach me for about an hour & only charge me $30.

On those occasions, I would give him an extra $10 to make it an even $40 because I knew he was giving me a discount.

At my last lesson with him, he mentioned that for me to get my handicap lower I would probably have to go somewhere to get more detailed lessons (such as video & stuff like that). So reluctantly I went to GolfTec and spent a TRUCKLOAD of money on lesson packages.

I do NOT tip the GolfTec guy. I actually wish I could cash in the remaining lessons I have with them & get my money back :( Too late now I guess. I have 4 lessons left with GolfTec so I'm not sure what I'm going to do after that's done.

Not sure if I should go back to my guy that got my handicap down to about 6, but said he couldn't do much more for me.

I don't want to go back to GolfTec, my handicap has been 11 this whole year and I'm not satisfied.

There is a Mike McGetrick academy here in Colorado that I could try, but that is expensive too.

//// sorry for the rant

Let me start off by stating, I am not cheap.

That being said, this whole tipping thing is getting out of hand! Don't get me wrong, I waited tables 5 nights a week all through college and 100% paid for my college by EARNING tips. When I go out to eat, I often tip 25% and you really have to mess up to not get 20% automatically. When I order a beer from the beer guy at the game or at a bar I give a buck for every drink I order. The guy who washes my car and the girl who cuts my hair both get tips.

But.... I don't feel the least bit bad when I get my coffee from my coffee shop and don't give the change back. I proudly take my Subway sandwich, burrito, etc and draw a line through the tip portion of my receipt and only sign for the amount due. In fact, I think it is outrageous that the "tip:_______" even appears on my credit card receipt. What did Jared from Subway do to earn even a dollar? Did he come refill my drink, deliver my food, ask if I need anything else and comply happily when I did....NO! Plus, he earns minimum wage!

It drives me nuts that everyone all expects a tip for doing their job. When I was a kid and worked fast food, I never expected a tip. I went in, did my job, provided excellent customer service, and did it because I was suppose to.

Sorry to rant, but to answer your question. No, he does not expect a tip because he is compensated by his wage.

I have been a golf instructor for over 30 years. Do not give an instructor a tip. That would be an insult. We are not waiting on tables or pouring drinks for minimum wage plus tips. We are professionals. Do you tip a lawyer or doctor or dentist?
