Background: I use my 5 wood often on par 5 approach shots and long par 4's. It's a 12+ year old off the shelf walmart dunlop. My 4 iron carries 190 and off the turf my 5 wood doesn't carry much farther if any at all (not as consistent with my wood distances as with irons), I don't use my 3 iron due to lack of ability and I'd rather layup with a 4iron then hit the 3.

Question: I'm not sure if I should replace my 5w with a new wood or with a hybrid. What I don't understand with hybrids is how they equate to irons, some hybrids only state the degree of loft, but what I need is "this is a 3 hybrid to replace a 3 iron for carry distance." I think with a 3 or 2 iron hybrid I could get close to that distance but at that point isn't a hybrid basically a wood in shape and design anyway?

I'm looking for recomendations on manufacturers and whether I should get a hybrid or wood. As a side note what's the difference between a rescue club and hybrid or fairway wood?

Thanks.

Welcome fellow Illini.

I find the hybrid more versatile than the fairway wood most of the time.

I still prefer fwy wood off the tee, when called for. Can't seem to really hit them well other than from the tee. But that is more on me than the club.

Hard for me to justify a 3W and 5W. Would rather have a couple of hybrids.
and replace the long irons. Make room for another wedge.

Hybrid is more like an iron with a wide sole. A hybrid of and iron and a fwy wood.
I think hybrid and rescue club are more or less interchangeable terms.

The hybrid is more like and iron, shorter shaft than a fwy wood. The fwy wood would be more like your driver, except smaller head, higher loft and and shorter shaft.

My advise is to stick with what works for you and what you feel comfortable with.
By all means try out the hybrids, you may never go back. Demo a few different models and shaft types. I prefer the graphite shafts.

Should be able to get some good deals this time of year. Closeouts on this year and left overs from last year at the end of the golf season here up north.

i will soon buy the 909 F2 15.5* but right now i am leaning towards a two hybrid instead of a five wood as its more useful from tight lies and from the rough.
