About what do you need to shoot to make a golf team and how many kids do they take. I was wondering because its about time my kid tried out for the team.
Thanks.

to make the team for my school the coach wants at max to be shooting mid-high 80's(people shooting this would most likely be low on jv or medalists). and on our team we only have 12 people.. 4 varsity, 4 JV, and 4 medalists.

of course it varies from school to school. I don't want to scare you with what I'm about to say but for my school making the team was really difficult.

There were 6 guys each on varsity and junior varsity. I tried out, little did I know, with absolutely no chance at making the team with my scores in the 90s. Everyone on the team presently shot low 70s, occasionally dropping a couple under par. To even get into consideration you probably had to shoot sub-40 9s. It was just insane. But then again, our team was very good.

For other schools in the area that I know of it's not even close to as hard to make the team so it's different for every school. Good luck.

definitely depends on the school. If I didn't play baseball I would have played golf for my school. Back then I shot high 80's and I would have made varsity.

crazy I know.

My highschool was similar. Our teams were made up of 6 golfers, top 4 scores counted. Our varsity team routinely shot in the 280's or low 290's (average score roughly par to +1 for the 4). Our junior varsity team shot in the neighborhood of 310-330 depending on the conditions/course.

If a varsity golfer went out and shot 80, there was a pretty good chance that he'd lose his spot to a JV'r for the next match. This contrasts heavily with the school just down the road. If you were a bogie golfer, you were varsity material. Our JV team beat many of the varsity teams on a weekly basis.

I am going to say it can vary greatly from school to school. Some schools might have 3-4 guys that can break 80. Others might be lucky to have one guy that can break 90.

Have him ask the coach at school and see what he says. Some schools are desperate for players so it might not even be that big a deal.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

My average this year for high school is 39.8ish. I'm the #2. My individual record is 10-2. Our 6 is around 48. And our 7 just started playing. We're actually one of the better DII schools around though. Our record is 9-3-1 and 2 of our 3 losses have come against DI schools.

If he shoots around 43-45 consistently he'll make it.

I would say there are no requirements for my home town golf team. I have seen a few of them practicing last winter at the golf dome. Lets just say it was kind of scary. It is probaly because there were 140 people in my graduating class. Compared to my wifes was 800.

at my school, im the #1 and Im like a 4.5 handicap. Our number 2 shoots under 45 on a good day and its only downhill from there. All depends on the school.

    • Day 5 - extremely long range practice session. Probably one of my best practice sessions ever. Doing things in slow motion is like 5x'ing the effectiveness of the practice. Also, I need these same "falling into lead leg" feels on my wedges. And guess what? Practicing this feel on shorter wedges is ALSO EASIER AND MORE EFFECTIVE. Combining much slower than full speed practice with shorter (50-90 yard) shot practice was really good. Change the picture on these shorter shots first. Feel like I'm keeping my arms as straight as possible on the backswing while hinging my wrists earlier is an incredible feel. I feel like this is doing stuff to my sequencing somehow? Much less rushed at the top because hinging was done at a reasonable time? One note someone made on my swing thread before I went on a hiatus was regarding this so I played around with it.  Clubs that don't require as much weight/pressure shift feel fantastic (driver/3-wood/hybrid), but that's almost always been the case.

    • Correct, just like relief from a sprinkler head; you can't take a giant stance to put it in play (unless of course that is genuinely how you play). If you take your normal stance and water is visible you get relief, if you have to jump to stand on one foot to get it to show no relief. IF the rule was that if you could get water to show at all, there would have been nowhere on that course anyone could play. I can't comprehend why the ruling has become so controversial, I think Sam called 2 officials to see if one would maybe be more lax than the other, but besides that he knew the rule which is why even he didn't make a huge deal out of it to either offical.
    • But......but what if I wanted to play the gold tees......☹️
