My quest for a new set of irons has started. I spent some time at the local golf store when a local club fitter introduced me to Tour Edge - Exotics XCG Irons. To be honest I do not know much about the brand or this model. The store has a complete fitting cart and are willing to provide just about any options you can ask for. Also, while I was in the store, they dropped the price by $100 which makes me wonder if they are going to be replaced by a newer model.

So what do you think? Are these irons any good?

FYI, my current short list of potential next set of irons are:
Adams a7
Mizuno MX300
Cobra S2 Forged
Maybe Tour Edge Exotics XCG

Thanks for your thoughts.

I dont know much about tour edge exotics but I have seen good players using their putters which I have hit and they are quality clubs. I assume the same would be true about their irons. You only have a dozen or so posts so you probably dont know about it yet but EVERYONE on this forum loves mizunos so, judging by any opinions on here, you cant go wrong with the mizunos.

In my Ping bag:

While I don't own the Tour Edge Exotics mentioned, I do own many other Tour Edge clubs.

Great clubs. Lifetime warranty. Hard to beat in my book.

I am a big fan of Tour Edge.

Their strength is in their drivers and especially fairway woods and hybrids. I had a set of their game improvement irons when I started playing regularly about 8 years ago. They were a very good value. XCGs are aimed at a different market, a better player than the hacker I was at that time. I would certainly think they are worth trying and comparing to the others. It is a good company.

shiiiiiiiittt, arent those things like 900 bucks? for that much they better be good, especially for not being a very big name/known brand. i personaly think all there stuff is over priced.. i dont think they have a putter that is less than $200 and driver that is less than $250-300

The putter shown here is way less than $200

http://www.touredge.com/products/geomaxputters.asp And they do have drivers less than $200. Shop around, you'll see. Now their Exotics are their top of the line clubs. They are more expensive, and get very good reviews.

Isn't Ashland flat and windy? Playing 845s? Except for the Cobras that list is pretty heavy into game improvement? Have you considered any of the clubs aimed at mid handicap? You will have trouble keeping most of the clubs you listed low. That factor is one of the ones that led me to my iron choice.

Yes Alshland is flat and windy and the Ping G10's with AWT shaft go high! I went back to my old 845's and am hitting them straight but would like to update them. The irons that I listed were suggested by a local fitter but I did not see them on a trackman because the machine was down at the time that I was there.

The problem that I have is that I am a Hooker! The Ping G irons have too much offset built in and the sole is too large. I was told that when you slice the ball these features will help straighten out the ball flight. If you already draw the ball these features may produce a hook. Same info from two fitters (Ping) and two club teaching pros.

  • 2 years later...

I have been playing seriously golf for 11 years now. About two years ago I started a new business which totally took up my time and as a result made a once a week golfer. My handicap took a a serious toll. From 8-10 to 14.8. Last week I went a vacation in florida and bought a tour edge exotics xcg-4 5 wood. UNBELEiVEABLE! My weakest part of my game. This club rocks.

    • Day 2:  I hit a bucket of balls this morning.  Not gonna lie, almost didn’t go since it was my first time going alone and it was a little intimidating.  I mostly hit with my driver (the last bit of balls was with my 7 iron).  The sun was in my face but I think the ones that had good contact with went the furthest yet (maybe 150 yards then a good roll?).  Once I switched to my 7, the first half of my balls were crap.  I’ve always hit my irons before my driver when practicing and done fine - does this make any difference or is it just because I’m so green?
    • It's likely per "category" of clubs, so irons would be one category, wedges would be a category, driver a category, fairway woods/hybrid a category, etc. They aren't going to charge you $50 per iron for a fitting. Almost all iron fittings are done with like a 6 or 7 iron, fitters don't carry full sets of every iron. So yes, if you use a 7 iron for the fitting and let's say you get fit into the P790 with a certain shaft, 1 degree flat and .5" longer than normal you would just order the full set of P790s with that shaft/lie angle/length combination and you'll be perfectly fine.
    • I think the $50 fitting price tag is per club. The clubs I am most interested in getting fitted for are irons. And I'd rather not spend a bunch on getting fitted for multiple irons. Would I be fairly safe to assume that choosing something like a 6 or 7 iron for fitting would likely relate to other lofts in the same configuration/make/model?
    • A Mevo is 500. Comes with little decals to hit balls inside too.
