Hey all - been reading a lot of posts pertaining to the importance of getting fitted. But I always seem to see people saing how important it is to try out different clubs etc.

BUT - what if your swing is sucky. I'm a lefty - and pushing just about everything left - How can I try out new clubs, or get fitted, unless I'm hitting the ball decent?

as far as i know, your swing is a part of getting fitted and playing with fitted clubs is supposed to help you play a little better. unless you're going to have major surgery on your swing, i would say just go ahead and get fitted regardless of your skill level.

But can getting fitted make you close your club properly through your downswing. Not trying to start a fight or argument or anything, just trying to understand a little bit better.

Just in my head I'm thinking that if I get fitted with a pretty screwed up swing vs. a decent one that needs a little work - My fitting won't go right and I'll be all messed up once I do get my swing in decent shape. I'm not stubborn on this, just wanting to be educated on this. Thx for the answer prutkows. Anyone else? or anything to add?

I think there are 2 things to look at here.

First off, you obviously want new clubs right? In that case getting fitted is always beneficial.

Secondly, you hit the ball out to the left a lot? And don't feel your swing is "decent"?

What you need to do IMHO is go and see your local pro who will be able to advise you on both of the above. He'll start you on the road to getting your swing right, and will also be able to recommend clubs which suit you and that will be able to be fitted to you.

So, yeah, first off go and see the pro, talk to him about what your faults are - or what you think they are, hit a few balls and go from there.

Is it your swing or your current clubs? You may not be able to get the clubface closed if the shaft is too stiff (as you describe "pushing everything left") or other variables such as lie angle, etc. I recommend the fitting. When I had my fitting for my irons, the on-staff pro gave me a few tips based on what he noticed while watching me hit balls.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
