So I took a few years off from golf after my collegiate playing days and now that I'm back I'm interested in what the best forged cavity back or muscle back irons out there are. I've seen the titleist AP2s and they look pretty nice but I don't know what else is out there brand wise. I currently play Cleveland TA2s and I love em but down the road I may look to upgrade those bad boys.

I'm also new to rifle shafts, my experience with iron shafts in the past was always dynamic gold steel shafts and nothing else. I have a swing speed of around 128mph and I hit the ball very high so I was reading about rifle shafts and realized I don't know anything about them. What would any of you guys suggest as far as shafts for me hitting high and having a fairly high swing speed. I prefer as low torque as possible for my clubs.

What's in my hoofer 2 golf bag:

Driver:: R9 9.5* with Fujikura Rombax 7Z08 shaft in X-stiff
3 wood:: R9 15* with Fujikura Motore F1 65g in X-stiff
2-PW: TA2 with Dynamic Gold X-100Wedges: 588 Gunmetal 53* Gap and 60* LobPutter: Pro Platinum Newport 2 with custom paint and stamp on heal/toeBall:

It's been almost 20 years since my swing speed was that high, and back then all we played were DG x-100s, and I hit everything high. Now, I'm old enough for the sr. tour by almost 5 years, swing 110-112, play px 5.5s and still hit everything high. It is (IMHO) a better feeling shaft with tighter dispersion. Maybe a 6.5 for you?

In the Bag

Ping i15 8* Diamana Whiteboard

Titleist 909f3 13.5* Aldila NV

Ping S57 3-PW KBS C-taper

Macgregor 52, 56, and 60 wedges

SC Newport 2.5

You might even want to consider the 7.0. You have roughly the same swingspeed as pros like Mickelson and Villegas who play the Project X 7.0. I don't have any experience with the Rifle shafts but I believe they launch lower than the Project X so you might want to give those a shot.

The DG X100 are very stiff and launch the ball low. Same goes for the KBS Tour Xstiff. You have many different shafts to test out so your best option is to hit them all keeping the same clubhead to see differences in ballflight.

We have very similar swings. My swing speed is about 120 - 123 consistantly. Have always hit a high ball flight. If you normally hit a high ball and go with the project-x's, expect to hit them a little higher. I use the 6.0, you might need the 6.5 or 7.0.

The only problem I have at times is working the ball. I tend to hit the ball very straight with these shafts. I have had these shafts for only about 3 months, so I'm hoping with a few more months under my belt I'll be back to my normal ways. I bet if I actually went to the range my shaping would be a lot better. Good luck.

    • Hi all. I've joined as a TST sponsor and while I don't intend to bombard your forums with product plugs ad nauseum, I wanted to put a bit of philosophy behind how I've trod this path. Although I've only been playing golf since COVID, I've realised there are minute changes in golf setups that impact performance like no other sport I have played/contested in my life. Recently I made a super small change to my grip (using a trigger index finger on my trail hand) that has improved my ball striking dramatically. It blows my mind. I love being so involved in something that my spare moments are spent analysing how I played and how I can improve. (I recently looked at my stats and my worst pickup holes are Par 5s - I actually play the lowest index holes better than the rest - what he heck?? Mental game after bad shots and concentration needs work there methinks) And when the small changes matter so much, we need to ensure there is a strategic approach to improvement. Incremental change is critical. Don't deviate from what is known without understanding that any change affects another. This is where the concept for my training aids was born. Something Erik shared a long time ago - The Virtue of being a Stupid Monkey - stole way too much of my spare time this week pondering. Do I want to know WHAT to do, or do I want to know WHY to do it? It is indeed the what. I've always been a "Try it, and if it works, keep doing until something better springs to mind." A sore back or knee will ruin your round. Do you want to to know how to play around it, or do you need to understand why it's happening? I'll go into more detail on this soon. In the meantime, here's a video that wraps up the basics of SwingMate, the flagship product. Thanks for having me!
    • Possibly, deffo trying to weaken my right hand somewhat. Left hand I believe is fine as I'm mostly fingers there with grip under the fat pad. But my lesson tomorrow will hopefully shed some light
    • I'm not sure.  What could this do that any of the documentaries on this dude haven't already done? I will say, I remember this unfolding in real life back in the day. My sister and I watched this as it happened. Then we heard about the fact that the studio wasn't going to pay him. But then they finally did pay him.
    • Could also be how you align your wrists and rotate your forearms. Not sure you are re-gripping the club. There is nothing noticeable in the videos. I do agree with the grip being very strong in the right hand. Also, maybe too much in the palm of the left hand.
