I just started playing this past spring and I am trying to get a game improvement plan together. However, I am not sure in which order I should take the necessary steps. I intend to get more lessons (I've had about five with a not so great instructor) but I also want to get fitted for new clubs.

Should I take the lessons before I get fitted for new clubs? If so about how many? I'm just not sure at which point in my game I should take the next step and get fitted. I also don't want to get new clubs without first getting fitted.

If you've already had five lessons, I'd go ahead and get fitted for some forgiving clubs.
Purchase a book on the full swing and on the short game.
When you practice, spend equal time on the full swing and short game.

Here's a pdf of club MPF factors. The higher the MPF, the more forgiving the club.

Books-take a look at the Reading section here.
The Stack and Tilt book and Stan Utley's short game book are highly recommended.

I just wanted to re-emphasize what uttexas said about short game. So many people just beat balls at the range and never work on chipping, pitching, and putting. IMO, this should be at the top of your list in terms of game improvement.

I have never been fitted for clubs so I can't comment, although I do plan on getting fitted soon.

Thanks for the info! I'm pretty stocked with books and started my learning with Hogan's Five Lessons. I've got Utley's short game and putting books. I bought a putting mat and made the training aid in his book. Good stuff indeed, especially since there is two feet of snow here!

Regarding the fitting, is Goftec any good? I searched them on here and read mixed reviews. I don't know of any other places to get fitted though.

Definitely work on the short game. Really, consider taking a lesson just on the short game. A pro who looks at what you have so far could be a big help in getting it close.

That said, work on your tee shots. By this, I don't mean trying to hammer the ball 300 yds. Rather, learn to get the ball in the fairway consistently. Don't be afraid to tee off with a 3-wood if your Driver is misbehaving.

Focus, connect and follow through!

    • Day 33 (13 Dec 25) - Worked on weight shift and resetting the left heel during downswing (after listening to a discussion on Golf School this morning on PGA Tour Radio).  It centered on how Jack Nicklaus lifted his lead heel and how long driver champs do as well.  Taking cues from that discussion, worked an exaggerated feel of the left heel working doing some swing drill in the backyard using the 7i.  Wrapped up the session by hitting a few low bump and run shots in the backyard - keeping the process slow and exaggerated.

    • It may not have been block practice, though, is one of the main points here. You may have been serving and from the same place, but you were likely trying to do slightly different things. It seems that would only be blocked practice if you were trying to hit the same exact ball hit to you to the same exact place in the far court. I'm not sure that's as random as if the ball that you're given to hit is at different places, too, but again…
