I am looking at getting a new set of irons after 11 years with my trusted Taylor Made Tour Burner irons. After going through a few shops I have been hitting the Callaway X-Prototype irons and they are amazing, so solid and responsive and a fantastic ball flight, for the first time in a long while I had a smile on my face after hitting golf shots. These clubs can be ordered individually and my only concern is the long irons.

I play at a relatively short course and I give it a fair old crack so on maybe 12 of the 14 long holes (par 4 & 5's) I will not be hitting more than a wedge / 9 - iron under normal conditions for my approach shots. With this in mind I carry 4 wedges as that is the true scoring range for me. So this limits what i can carry at the long end. I am in the process of swapping my 5-wood / 3-iron combo for a hybrid leaving me thinking, should I go for the X-Prototype 4 and 5 irons, or get the more forgiving X-forged irons?

I need get back into playing regional tournaments which are played on longer courses where hitting 4 / 5 - irons into greens so I need to be competent with them.

Unfortunately the ranges around here only have 6-irons for demo clubs but i can tell the X-forged irons are that bit more forgiving. I guess if I go down that route the question would be am I going to see any difference in carry between the two, will I have a larger or smaller gap in carry between my 5 and 6 irons?

Thanks.

I'm going combo set. 4i-7i X-Forged, 7i-PW X-Proto. Gonna swap between the 7iron based on what I want to look at. I think the X-Proto has a bit of an odd toe. Sits a little high. Anyway, I say mix'em up.

Yeah I think I will go that way. As I said all I was able to hit was the 6-iron in both and I couldn't see any issues with the X-Prototype but I think the 4 and 5-irons may need that bit extra.

Interested with your comment about the toe, was that the style of club or more that where too upright? I guess it is a design feature.

I've been looking at these sticks, too, but I haven't had a chance to hit one yet. I thought they were a lot more expensive than most irons but when I actually checked, the price difference isn't all that much. All I know is they are gorgeous and everywhere I look I see glowing reviews...

One thing I am curious about is the exact offset they have. I know it's minimal, but is there anywhere I could find the exact figures? (It's not listed on Callaway's website.) Other irons I'm considering (Titleist 710 CBs and Mizuno MP 62s) have slightly more offset than I like. That's why right now Bridgestone J38 CBs are my top pick (or the X Protos).

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
