My brother is starting to get into golf in a big way now and has got his handicap down to 20 and has a very nice swing, the only thing at the moment stopping him is between his ears. Anyway upto now he has been using some ladies Ping clubs which suited him until he had a growth spurt and increased his strength, typical 14-year old! So now it is new club time.

I think he should go with a more 'game improving club' that will help him in the short-term and get him down to 10 or less by this time next year. Some places over here have some pretty good offers on clubs like the Taylor Made Tour Burner Irons for around £300.

He is of the opinion that he should get a more advanced set of irons like the Callaway X-forged for £379 (which is actually a bloody good price). Now these clubs won't suite him 100% in the short term but will I am confident he will be able to handle them.

What does everyone else think, I know it is not easy without knowing more details but as I am typing this is I heading towards the X-forged more and more! Haha, golf is a confusing game ain't it!

I'm pretty much a beginner, so don't really know what I am talking about of course. That being said, everything I've heard and read up to until now is that for someone that could handle them, it's better to grow into an advanced set than to go for the quick fix of game improvement clubs. I think the game improvement clubs would be more for someone like me with a real high handicap that has little hope of ever seriously improving my game!

Just my thoughts

Yeah I agree, my only concern is if he struggles with them a bit then that may discourage him, you know what kids are like! Also I want to try and teach him about making rational decisions when buying things and not just jumping for the shiniest thing in the shop, but that is not a golfing matter!

Both great points. Of course the flip-side is that is you choose the clubs for him over the ones that HE wants.........either way you just can't win with these kids today!

Good luck to you

Oh yeah I agree! I've been playing good end of 16 years now, only really 2 for him so my parents ask me for advice before the blow a good chunk of cash for a 14 year-old. Mind you he may have to make the mistakes to learn by them I guess, Just like I did (if you believe that you believe anything! haha)

Yeah why is it we have to learn EVERYTHING the hard way! And then when we have kids ourselves (albeit mine is only 2), we still expect them to learn from us instead of making their own mistakes too! Haha, sigh.

See I'm lucky, I have a brother and sister 12 and 15 years younger than me so I get a trial run first!

That's useful! Hopefully doesn't deter you from ever having your own though.

    • Day 36: back to some mirror work tonight. Need a bit more forearm roll in my feels to help with the shallowing.
    • _sigh_ so close to red text.  Went away for three days, but didn't do a practice morning-of-departure (Friday) nor evening-of-return (Sunday), so I had three misses, back to day one. Day 1, May 4 2026.  At home today, spent nearly an hour in my practice room, hitting about three dozen practice balls, primarily with my 6-iron.
    • Day 254 5-4 Arms off chest in backswing and downswing. Short swing, pause and then hit.  Hit foam balls. Keeping arching of wrist a focus as well.
    • I would think of it in terms of time. The time it takes to get the arm angle into a good position to deliver the club with proper shaft lean. Another component is rotation, but that is also a matter of timing. It relates to how the body stalls to give the golfer time to hit the ball. If you have to get 80+ degrees out of that right elbow in one third of a second versus 50 degrees in the same time then you have to steal time from somewhere. It is usually body rotation. That does not help with shaft lean.  I agree in that amateurs tend to make the swing more complicated than pro golfers.
    • I haven't been able to practice like I wanted and won't for the next week.  1. The weather sucks in Ohio this year. I have been mostly inside hitting foam balls. Just kind of my basic stuff.  2. I woke up last Saturday with a left side rib muscle on fire. If I turned or leaned a certain way it would spasm that almost buckled my knees. I have been taking a break to let that settle. I don't want to get a long term injury. I think I pinched a nerve or just aggravated a muscles.   3. I am going on a mini-vacation to Florida (screw you Ohio weather) with a friend, and rolling that into a work conference I have next week. I will be with out my clubs for a week.  I will be back next in two Fridays to hit the ground running with some warmer temps and better weather in Ohio, hopefully. I would really like to get more out on the course and the range.
