Smaller Target = Better shot?

I was chipping out the back of my garden.

I put a putt-returner at one end and I stuck a credit card into the ground on the other side.
I hit the credit card twice, I didn't even hit the putt returner once.

Does the cred card make me focus more or something?

I suppose the question is, without those things, what were you aiming at? One of the things that you'll hear pros say over and over - and it is one of the Bob Rotella fundamentals - is that you go for as small a target as posible. This means that even with your driver, you don't think "middle of the fairway" or "that tree" you think "the branch on the top left of that tree". As for chipping your hole is the target, by way of a VERY specific landing point.
