Anybody Ever Played in a Callaway Scoring Tournament?

I received an email about a tournament next Tuesday at a local course... but the scoring format is Callaway Scoring. I've never played a tournament like that... but in looking online and then using some scorecards from previous rounds... it pretty much appears impossible to go low in that format. Nearly EVER calculation I've done is between 74 and 78.

Has anybody ever played in a tournament like that and, if so... are the winning score usually in the range I've listed above? The course that is hosting the tournament is one that I shoot between 92 and 95 on. So, if I shoot a 95 on that course while posting 7's on three holes... I would deduct 18 strokes from my score (2-1/2 worst scores... 7, 7, 4). That would net me down to a 77.

If I play well and shoot a 92 on that course while posting 7 on one hole and a 6's on two holes... I would deduct 16 strokes from my score (2-1/2 worse scores... 7, 6, 3) and then subtract one from that number, giving me 15 strokes off my score. That would net me down to a 77 again.

It just seems like the ONLY way to score well is to have a good round with a few blowup holes (posting double pars on a 5 and a 4). Even then, it seems like I wouldn't be posting much better scores.

Anyway, I was just wondering what the experience is from others who have played in such a format.

Thanks!

CY

Nobody, huh... ?

Guess I'll post a review of how it all went after I play next Tuesday.

I've not only played in, but I've "run" tournaments with Callaway scoring. Granted, it was only a family golf outing tournament, with players ranging from age 10 to 80, but that is precisely the type of group the Callaway system is designed for. If you have a bunch of golfers who are varying ability levels and don't have handicaps, the Callaway is perfect for just the reason you stated. Everyone always ends up in the 70s, no matter if you shoot 68 or 118.

The key to Callaway is to have a card full of 3s and 7s as opposed to 4s and 5s. Aside from that (or just going into the 60s gross), there's really no correct way to play a Callaway tournament. And I'm pretty sure there's usually a triple-bogey or double-par cap, so you can't just run up a 15 on some hole. So in all, my advice would be to shoot at pins all day and be aggressive. Enjoy.

Thanks for the confirmation. I figured that was the deal. I'm pretty sure that the scoring is nothing higher than double par. It just seems like, using previous scorecards, every one of my scores comes out to between 75 and 78. Most of those holes were 4's and 5's... like you said. I didn't have anything higher than an 8 on that course at any time. I'm assuming that the person who wins this thing is likely going to post a score in the high 80's with a 10, an 8 and a 7 mixed around a bunch of pars.

I guarantee my score will be in the high 80's to low 90's... but, it'll be like most rounds with mostly bogey scores and MAYBE a double thrown in there, too. I'll probably get my Callaway score to be in the same range... 75 or so. CY
