"Game Improvement" irons vs "Player's" irons?

There are quite a few options in between your current set and a "player" set. Search the forum, and you will find more reading/arguing that you can handle about who should play what clubs.

If it were me, I'd go for a mixed set of irons and hybrids/SGI clubs (as mentioned above several times) with something like an CG7, AP1, G15 etc as your primary scoring irons. These clubs will allow you to turn shots as you'd like, but provide the forgiveness you are used to. Let's face it, you aren't getting younger and for the most part working the ball is more a matter of swing mechanics than club selection.
