Help me fill out my bag.

Hello guys, Im looking for some advice for a new club or two to round out my bag. I have a driver, a 5 wood and a four hybrid. I also carry a four iron that I rarely hit. I need something to fill in some of the gaps in my longer club yardages and would take the four iron out. What would you suggest. I was thinking thinking a 3 hybrid and maybe a 3 wood. Thoughts?

Is the gap between your driver, 5wd & 4h really that large? If you're bound & determined to change it up a bit maybe try a 4wd, 3h & 5h setup? Or uncomplicate things & throw the 4i into the garden & be done with it.

id add a 3 hybrid. Do you hit your 5 wood very well? If you do then maybe a 3 wood might be another good choice to add. If you dont, you probably wont be able to hit a 3 wood very well either. Hybrids are usually easier to hit than fairway woods, especially from the rough or any awkward lie, just so hard for a high handicapper to make solid contact from anything but a perfect lie in the fairway with a 3 or 5 wood. Im not an overly long player but i can usually reach most par 5's(around 500 yards or maybe a little more) with driver, 3 hybrid and pw or sw. Ive learned that hitting the 3 hybrid gives me the best chance to advance the ball farther on average than my 3 wood. Like chef said less sometimes is more, i only have 12 clubs in my bag and thats enough for me, those are the ones i can hit. Finding clubs you can hit will help improve you more than trying to get extra distance from something you have trouble hitting consistently.

Ok, that would probably make the most sense.

Driver is usually 245 to 260 yards 5 wood is around 210 to 220 4 hybrid is 190 to 200 I guess the biggest gap is between driver and 5 wood. I do hit the hybrid much better than the 5 wood and can usually hit from bad lies with it. 3 hybrid would probably cover the distance of th 5 wood and then a 3 wood would fill the gap between driver and it. Would that make sense? Thinking 3 hybrid first though

I would get a 3 hybrid to replace the 5 wood (as you hit your hybrid so well)
I would say bin the 4i (as you hit your hybrid so well) and get a 3 wood to bridge the driver-3hybrid

so you would have

driver
3 wood
3 hybrid
4 hybrid
then I assume 5-PW and some wedges.

I was going to post the same thing. One thing I'll add is if you intend to go this route, make sure you try out the 3 wood before you buy it. I find it much more difficult to hit a 3 wood off the ground than a 5 wood.

good thing people practice and all. just because its harder is no reason to not get it. I find a 3 wood to be crucial in a lot of situations. I commonly tee off with my 3 wood, 3 woods come crucial for eagle opportunities on par 5's, etc.

Yes, 3 wood is not easy to hit but for me, a 3 wood comes much more important than a 5 wood. Which si why i've dropped my 5 wood for a 3 hybrid.

heres wat i would do in your situation. get a 3 wood, and a 3 hybrid. drop the 5 wood and 4 hybrid. at this point, your biggest gap would probably come between your 3 hybrid and a 4 iron. I've personally not had much problem with this. my distances usually go like this:

driver - 270-280 3 wood - 250ish 3 hybrid - 220-230 4 iron - 200-210 5 iron - 190-200 6 iron - 180-190 7 iron - 170-180 8 iron - 160-170 9 iron - 130-140 pw - 120-130 56* - 100-120 at full swing 60* - 80ish at full swing

Because he is asking a question about filling yardage gaps in his longer clubs, and mentioned specifically the distance gap between his Driver and 5 wood. Telling him he's stuck with that problem gap isn't constructive. Instead, he should try different 3 woods, and find one he is comfortable with.

think of the average 20 handicapper and par 5's.

What do they try to do? They take out the 3 wood and most of them go OB. If the 3 wood or even the 5 wood isn't there they won't go for that sort of shot. It's better to hit a 3i down and have a wedge onto the green and make a par or a bogey at the worst instead of taking your 4th from the fairway.
