I am going to take my first golf lesson next week, and I'm just wondering what I should expect.

Thanks!

This is the hardest thing for almost all golfers when they take a lesson...

You have to accept the fact that when you practice the changes that come from the lesson, it's going to feel unnatural, uncomfortable, and you are going to have plenty of growing pains. Work through them! Too many people get frustrated because they aren't instantly transformed into great golfers, and revert back to old habits. If you do that, you've just wasted the money spent on the lessons as well as the time of the instructor and your own.
I have been playing almost my entire life, and I regularly take lessons. It usually takes me a good month to work through a swing change, and I do something golf-related almost every day (play, go to the range, chip/putt).
I once heard a good analogy that I keep in my mind when working on my game: "Practice with the philosophy of a something that pays by the hour, not by the job"

Post what the pro says here.
Some pro's can give bad advice, they're not all good.

And listen to what case says, if he changes your grip it'll take a few weeks to get used to it but it's worth the trouble.

You can expect some changes...and they will feel weird. It takes time to ingrain those in your swing. I've always equated lessons to two steps forward and then one step back. You take a leap forward when you work on the changes and incorporate them, then as you get further away from the lesson you revert to some (not all) of your habits. It's then time for another lesson. If you like your pro and get along, buying a pack of lessons is a good idea. I usually get them 5 or 6 at a time and use them over the summer for not only the swing but also the shortgame. Shortgame lessons are often overlooked. If you don't like your pro, find another one and repeat until you find someone you mesh with and understands your natural tendencies and is not just trying to put you in a mold.

Good luck! Some of the best money you'll spend on your golf game.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
