I got a new wedge finally, a demo 54˚ CG15 for $30 off, which I love. The new wedge inspired me to do something I've meant to spend time doing at the range for a long time. I've spent time hitting the new wedge with what are usually called 1/4 swings (hands to waist, so maybe more like 1/3), and 1/2 swings (hands to shoulder height, so maybe really 2/3).

My last round I was inconsistent with the driver (the other new club I got that day), but parred all the good drives I had (5), cause they were shortish holes, and I had 75-90 yards in on all 5. I'd found that my new wedge went 80 yards on the 1/2 swing, and put all but one of those within 10 feet! Of course, I parred them which tells you how my putting was that day (2 lip-outs), but I'm pumped.

Just thought I'd share and encourage anyone else who's put off spending time with this drill to get to it!

I rarely hit full wedge shots anymore. The benefits just don't outweigh the risks IMO. As long as a person practices these shots, a 3/4 SW or whatever it may be is a higher percentage shot than a full LW. Learning to hit 1/2 and 3/4 shots will change your game.

I'm battling the shanks on full swings right now. I went out last week and played almost all iron and wedge shots as 1/2-3/4 shots, I shot 39(9 hole course), the course plays to a 33 stroke index though, but nonetheless, it goes to show you, you don't have to hit your 5 iron 190 yards to play decent golf.

Maybe it is better to focus clockwise, left arm to 7:30 , 9:00 or to 10:30 (Dave Pelz) to have more repeatable 1/4 , 1/2 and 3/4 swings !

Important for me (maybe also for you) is to be "attack" the ball also with these partial swings.

Once you know your distances, it is easier to adjust a little bit for in between distances.

As for 3/4 swings ..... I about never hit full swings and went from handicap 30 to 15 in a few months as soon as I went form full swing irons to 3/4 to 7/8 swings. Whenever I have problems with my driver consistency, I also go down to about 7/8 to find the fairways again.

sound advice, I went from a 2.3 to probably scratch or better when I started hitting everything
3/4 with my short irons. I know my profile says 2.3 but that was like my last time I kept a handicap and that was like about wheuu, I am thinking like about 8 years ago.. SO honestly I don't know what my handicap is but I have a friend who was a Plus one and I use to give him tips so....

Anyways, one thing I like to add, for most people they can't swing with a shorter backswing. Imo, it is because they unhinge their wrist or drop their arms as their first move. They have to have a long swing to generate anykind of coil and feel any type of power, but if you know how to "spring" off your hip, a simple cock of the wrist up to 3/4 level and bump of the hip will generate about 75% full power. I am 5'9" and 150 and I can easily hit a sandwedge 100 and carry a drive 250 to 260 by just doing that... Hummm, In fact I think I am going to start a thread about that.

Oh,well, they won't let me post a new thread. I guess because I am new here, but when I get a chance I am going to try to post my swing and how I do 3/4 swings and It could perhaps help the bigginners and intermediate golfers here..

    • I have had the flu recently which gave me plenty of time to pore over Joseph Mayo’s instagram. I have hit a ton of shots each day on carpet and a little started how easy this shot is to make. Key thought for me is bring the club “no closer to the earth.” That really resonated with me. If I really steepen the attack angle I can hit my 58* lob wedge barely an inch or two off the ground and a repeatable distance. I don’t recommend this but tried it to what the end ranges are for angle of descent. I actually think a 62*-64* wedge might be even better for this shot.
