So I'm heading out to Scottsdale again this January and was wondering what courses people would recommend that I haven't played yet. I know that several private clubs are allowing non-members to play so if you have a recommendation please share. Here is where I have already played:

Grayhawk- both
Troon North- both
Wildfire-both
We Ko Pa- Cholla
McCormick Ranch
Ocotillo
Legend Trails

Thanks for the recommendations.

1. - We-Ko-Pa Saguaro course - perhaps the best of them all
2. - The Boulders - South Course - worth it for the surroundings alone
3. - Dinosuar Mountain at Gold Canyon
4. - Talking Stick North - Course is good on a plain piece of land
5. - Vista Verde
6. - The Boulders - North
7. - TPC Stadium (over-priced)
8. - TPC Champions - decent value
9. - Talking Stick South
10.- Eagle Mountain
11. -SunRidge Canyon - I found it too difficult for my game.
12. -Ranch Manana

I like your list. I'd switch Vista Verde to #10 and Eagle Mountain to #5.

I came back from my 1st Scottsdale trip (so i'm no expert) -- stayed at the Westin Kierland & played two rounds at Kierland G.C. there (as my wife took the car for a meeting). Gorgeous course with some really pretty holes, perfectly conditioned, overseed has come in beautifully. Not the most difficult course in the world (slope is only in the 120's), and as a "resort course" most landing areas are pretty generous...certainly helped my confidence though & shot a personal best 80 (should have shot 70's but choked on the last two holes...oh the power of the mind!). Might not be a bad "starter round" for your trip if you want a little tune-up before hitting the bad boys.

the resort itself is beautiful as well btw; their restaurant Deseo had spectacular food (we bumped into several locals who told us they regularly eat at that hotel restaurant)...Kobe beef skirt steak--yum...and it's right next to the Kierland Commons shopping area that also has several really good restaurants...Greene House was fantastic.

Driver: Cleveland Classic 270, 10.5*
Fairway Woods: Adams Speedline LP (3 & 5)
Hybrids: Wilson Staff Fybrids 21*, 24*, UST V2 stiff
Irons: Callaway X-20 Tour, 5-PW, Rifle Project-X (flighted) 6.0
Wedges: Cleveland CG15 DSG 52* & 58* +/- 56* Niblick

Putter: Yes! Amy

    • It isn't about maintaining focus 100% of the time when you are on the course. It is getting focus back for the shot at hand. Even PGA tour players will chat with their caddies or opponents about non-golf stuff, but then lock in. It is hard to try to constantly be 100% locked in for 4+ hours.  Totally normal thing to happen. You really only need a few moments of focus.  This is where a pre-shot routine helps. Maybe you need to add something that gets the focus back.  I just focus on every shot like a puzzle that needs solved. I like solving puzzle and problems. So, I try to be curious. Which then enhances focus. I think it lets me take each shot at hand. It lets me have the down time between shots. What I do is just get to the ball, and then start gathering information. Yardage, lie, wind, where is the pin at, etc.. Then I figure out what I want to do.  It's not like I can't shut off the thoughts and focus when I need to. I only need to focus for a few minutes before each shot.
