Hit the range today after work. Warmed up a bit then started working with the 7iron. Focused on bringing the club back online, then keeping it on plane and not crossing the line at the top. At first I was having a hell of a time not topping the ball, probably hit the front half of the ball a dozen times. Sat back and thought about it, then realized I was coming over the top and had the right elbow flying. Cut down to 3/4 swings and started keeping connected and hitting some solid shots. Worked up to full swings and had some decent swings. Probably hit 80 balls, last one I took my time and hit the first truly pure shot of the day, it was a great feeling, huge high draw.

Switched to 20* hybrid and immediately was hitting it solid. A bit of a hook when I let the right elbow fly, but when I concentrated on staying connected I was hitting nice draws, distance was solid 225 or so, I'm happy. Hit a few 3wds and Drivers just to get a feel for them.

Moved down to 80yd wedges, working on GW and SW to figure out what I like more from that range. Decided the GW is a little more forgiving at that range. Nobody else on the range so when I was out of balls, I just walked on the range hitting balls at the flag, working in from 80yds to around 30yds. Figured out that I'm way too "handsy" when taking short swings and practiced just taking the half swings with no wrist breaks, immediately better contact and it appeared to create much more spin (as much as you can tell hitting range rocks onto range "greens").

Finished up with a 1/2hr of putting, basically just putting from 30ft trying to get my putting "yips" taken care of. Figured out that I was simply lifting my head and mishitting a bunch. Worked a drill where I'd play a half dozen balls and keep working until I two putted ten in a row both up and downhill from 30ft. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but considering I had 6 three putts from that range this weekend, it's a big improvement. Did a little chipping until it got dark, worked on bump and run 7irons for the first time, then called it a night. Lots of learning for the first session.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
    • Is that the current generation Gamer? Another old standby for a firm and inexpensive ball is Pinnacle.  There are two models, the Rush and the Soft, but I don’t know what compression they are.
    • Good advice, but according to DSG website it is a 45 compression ball. My current ball is the Top-flite Gamer at 70. 45 is too low for me to go.
    • The 3 piece Maxfli Trifli is 2 dozen for $35.  The Trifli does not feel as soft as the Maxfli Softfli, which is why I like it. Other options would be one of the Srixons, which have a buy 2 get 1 free offer.
    • I have been carrying a 7 wood more often this year.  It’s especially handy if you have a downhill lie to an uphill green.  It’s also handy if the rough on the course is deep.
