Hi handicapper needs advice on buying irons.

Hey, Im a handicap 28, started playing a year and a half ago. I started with ancient wilson steel irons but know im getting better and think its time to buy some quality irons. My question is: Which irons should I get if Im looking for : 1. extreme forgiveness 2. lighter clubs 3.Steel shaft(got used to it)

Depends on what problems you have. :)

I just switched to a set of Nickent 3dx irons but have only had the chance to take them out on the course once and on the range a few times. I went from a set of 12 year old clubs to the 3dx and it's like I moved a couple centuries forward. I can't believe how much easier modern clubs are to hit - I've hit maybe a half dozen bad shots with it since I've gotten them.

If your clubs are really old it might just be better to buy a used set that's a couple years old and then upgrade again in a year or two. That way you get to use mostly modern equipment on the cheap and then you can get what you really need later as your scores drop.

I only got my clubs b/c I got them at a great price on eBay and I figure I can sell them next year for about what I paid for them and upgrade again.

Thanks, just registerded in this forum and feels good to get a first response. Im left handed and live in Spain so that limits my choice. However I heard the rac os from taylor made might be a good choice for high handicappers looking for forgiveness. Also herd about the cobra 3100 i/h. could be a good option for forgiveness. Any other suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. The irons you mentioned, both the TaylorMade and the Cobras, are good choices. You might also wish to consider the Callaway Big Bertha irons as well as the Callaway Hawkeye VFT model. The latter is discontinued, but remains, in my opinion, one of the easiest irons to use ever made. Callaway has a preowned web site and you will very likely be able to pick up a set at a great value, there. Other than that suggestion, there are many superb game improvement iron made by every major manufacturer. Try as many as you can and, if possible, get fit for your irons by a pro. Good luck.

Those irons above are great choices - esp since you can get used sets at callawaypreowned.com. E-bay is a great place to get some used sets pretty good price if cost is an issue. If it is not, don't be afraid to try out Mizuno's game improvment line. MX900 awesome ball speed - maybe a bit big for some. MX19 very very nice and the MX25 - maybe a bit hard to hit for now, but still the entire MX line is targeted at players that are new to the game! Take a look at their web site!!!

I have been playing for 7 years and I began with Callaway X-14's. Then bought Callaway X-16 pro series, and next moved into my present Mizuno MP30's & just love the feel & feed back of them (MP line is harder to hit than the MX line)

Whatever you choose, you will likely be astounded at how well the new technology will help you!!!

I was actually going to suggest the TM OS's before you mentioned them! I started out with a set of these, and I have still kept them as a backup set, because they are still playable. Don't forget eventually you will get better so might sell/trade in you beginner clubs, so it's probably not worth blowing loads on them.

Stick with Steel...more accurate and control.
