how much distance is the launch monitor off by on average? i'm planning to get custom fitted for a driver in the near future and was trying to do some research before i take the plunge. does the type of ball used for the launch monitor make a big difference in performance in terms of smash factor, launch angle, or carry? any experiences would be helpful. thanks!

The launch monitor is only as good as the operator who runs it. They must be calibrated correctly to obtain proper results. Also the type of launch monitor used is very important. The more variables the monitor measures, the more accurate the results will be. The TrackMan is by far the best launch monitor available today, since its radar tracking is extremely accurate and it gives true readings of ball flight. However, it is extraordinarily expensive, so don't expect to find it unless you are fit by one of the OEM's. Accusport's Vector is the industry standard due to its combination of fair accuracy with portability and relatively low price. You can expect to obtain accurate numbers for launch angle, spin rate, ball speed, and deviation from center. However, distance and club head speed are estimated, so don't worry too much if those are a little out of whack. Make things as normal as possible, bring your golf shoes, a glove, and of course, the type of ball you will play (unless the fitter will provide you with a wide selection). Take your time warming up, and if you have any questions, ask the fitter.

Gas can is right. also depends on what kind weather conditions exist. i don't know what temp/humidity that the launch monitor uses for a baseline. colder weather = less distance.
