Hello - long time reader, first time poster here.

6 handicapper whos game has gone to pot over the last 3 months.

Hitting the ball from the outside and heavy. Brought a camera to film my swing with a view to getting some online lessons - but can't find anyone, so thought I'd offer it up here for any advice from the knowledgeable folks on here.

Any thoughts at all welcome and much appreciated. Thanks, Pink

you do alot of what i do..

1: you roll your hands open in the backswing instead of just hinging. That is your clubface is open

2: You are up on your toes at impact, instead of being balanced, with that your butt comes towards the ball. Instead of having your left hip rotate back and up.

I think you should back up away from the ball a bit, you seem a tad close. Work on getting your wrist to hing with out opening the clubface. I got the feeling at first by feeling like my left hand stays pointed at the ground. Then i started to get the feeling of hinging earlier in the swing. Doing these two things i got my clubface more square to the swing path, than open.

The feeling i get when i swing well is my right hip driving towards the ball, The right hip has to lower through impact, and the left hip has to go up.

Good camera work. A couple of quick comments.

Your swing is pretty good, some small changes can make it more consistent. From the face on view you can see that the hips does not move a lot forward. The more you push the hips forward, the easier it is to come from the inside. It also looks like you should either drop the hands slightly from the top of the backswing or get them a bit lower on the backswing. The hands move in a pretty straight line towards the ball from the top of the backswing. With high hands, that can get you very steep, or over the top. If the hands drop a bit, they get down on a better plane to come from the inside. The alternative could be to not lift the hands that much. Right elbow would move closer to the body and the left arm would be on the same plane as your shoulders. The shoulder pitch looks good.

You could also benefit from better footwork. Letting the right foot roll in instead kicking forward and up on the toes. Your impact position is not bad, so I would put focus on those things I've mentioned to get you on a better plane coming down.

If any of this is unclear or needs more specification, let us know, there are lots of material, videos and pictures that can be used to explain.

How about Evolvr ? I've used it and couldn't be more pleased with the experience and results.

Keep in mind, this is coming from a golfer markedly worse than you, but.......

I've been really studying golf swing videos this winter, and have tried to really get a feel for positions at certain points in the swing.  I was able to freeze frame you within the :15 second mark and caught your hands as they were just 'touching' your right hip on the down swing.  Your left arm is pointing at about 7:00 - 7:30 and your wrists are almost completely released - with the clubhead a good 3-4 FEET yet from the ball.  The club shaft is almost straight inline with your left arm - again, at least 3 ft prior to impact.  Studying swings of the better/best players, I usually see some serious lag effect still at this point of the swing.

I think your heavy shots may be a result of releasing the club too soon on the way down.  From what I understand, that widens the arc too early and tends to plant the club in the ground too early - behind the ball.  I believe it also tends to promote an outside-in swing path at the bottom.

If you can get a freeze when your glove/left hand is exactly over your right hip/front pocket, let me know if you think maybe you are casting/flipping a bit.  My $ 0.02 worth.  Probably all it's worth.

    • Part of the clubmaker's process, in this case, is to have the player come back after a few rounds for any necessary tweaking, FWIW.
    • I totally agree with this but beginners are not good players that can adjust to almost every club setup.  A ping certified fitter, ex pro that plays at my home course, told me that the idea of the fitting in this case is to give the player the clubs that are at least suited for his body type in general. (body, arms, hands, strength, speed, etc) so he can go an play or have lessons with clubs that are not perfect for him but close enough. From there is up to the player to come back for another fitting in the future in case he feels his current clubs are no longer suited for his new swing/mechanics.  So.. I vote basic club fitting then lessons.
    • Okay, so my children and I got into a heated debate at the dinner table last night.  We were discussing making Christmas Cookies and got on the topic of what is the best cookie.  I personally think the Oatmeal Raisin is the best. My kids mocked me. "THAT'S AN OLD MAN COOKIE!"  Seriously? Does anyone besides me love the Oatmeal Raisin Cookie?  And if not, what is the best cookie?

    • Day 3: 12/12/2024 Okay, so I've already put in about a 1/2 hour of mirror work on my priority piece which I've nicknamed PPJ. The first to P's are starting to feel less bizarro but the J is still too late. As of now, I'm still thinking about it too much. So, although I'm anxious to hit balls, I'm sticking with the mirror work for another day or two. Then I'll move to the garage net.  I set up a small station right outside my office so every time I go in or out I can do a slow-mo PPJ in front of a mirror.
