I'm a noobie golfer and high handicapper, but I'm seeing exponential improvement in my driving off the tee, chipping and putting.   I've taken a few lessons, but I haven't been able to hit my hybrids consistently.  It is frustrating, as I'll hit a relatively straight 200 yard drive, but on a long par 4 or par five it takes me a few hits to get to the green because my hybrid play is so horrible.  I usually top the ball, or slice it badly.  The 2I hybrid is incredibly difficult to hit (10% chance of hitting a halfway decent shot, whereas with 4I hyrid I'm at 30% or so).

With my irons, I've learned to "attack the ball" and ideally, leave a divet in front of the ball (I'm reading "The Impact Zone" and like this theories on where the divet should be and how to attack the ball).   With the driver, I use a more sweeping motion (not sure if this is ideal), with good results.

Do you hit a hybrid more like your driver, or more like your irons?  When setting up, should I place the ball forward of my stance (i.e., in front of my left heel; like a driver) and use a more sweeping motion, or should my club face come down at the ball (and leave a divet in front of the ball).

Thoughts?  Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you are struggling to shift your weight forward. There is a checklist to make sure this happens. 1) When you turn on your backswing, keep your weight centered, shifting it no further back then the arch of your back foot. 2) End the backswing with a weight shift forward. I would suggest feeling like you are planting on your left foot, which starts the hips moving forwards. From there, the club should be moving on plane and just swing through towards the target. Also, you could be throwing away your wrist angles. If you get the forward weight shift going properly, and whip your club through impact instead of hitting at the ball or scooping it, you should be able to blast those hybrids high and straight.     • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉 
    • Thanks, interesting to read. The swing is definitely very timing dependent. I hit it consistently I guess but consistently bad.    
    • I've shot 91-74 on the same day before. Couple of years ago played a two round tournament on Bethpage Black. I shot 72 in the first round and 90 in the second. First round I played very well. Second round I played okay, but had about 5 shots that hit the lips of bunkers and bounced down into them. A couple of those wound up in footprints - I was unamused - and I failed to get them out. Anyway - lots of bunkers and my bunker play isn't great and then add a couple of footprints and me getting pretty tired and it added up to a lot.  Only you can really tell though what's causing the variance. It might be that your swing is very timing dependent and when it's timed well you play well and when it's not then it goes all over the place. In that case, some lessons and working on your swing could be the key. If it's more that you tend to feel like you hit it fairly consistently, but you have days where the shots come off and days where they don't, then that's more likely a course management issue. If that's what you need to work on, then you could read Lowest Score Wins and build a plan of attack based on that.  Rest assured though that a pretty big range from high to low is fairly common. Even PGA Tour players often have 18-20 shot spreads from best to worst rounds in a season. It's a common affliction among golfers.
