I am a right handed golfer. I have played for way to long to not know the answer to this...

When using my driver / 3-wood my right elbow makes a right angle at the top and travels down close to my right hip on the down swing. This gives me a little draw and is exactly what I want out of my woods. When I try to do the same thing with my irons I chunk 50% of the shots and the other 50% are not solid hits. To stop the embarrassing shots my iron swings are less inside out and I have a little fade on the longer irons. What can I do to get my irons to react the same as my woods do?

Could be your swing plane is too steep. Each club has a different plane depending on loft and shaft length, and if you are trying to maintain the same body position on all shots with all clubs, you might be coming down to steeply on impact, not allowing the face to square up and consequently the ball fades.

I appreciate the feedback. In face, I am forced to change my swing just to keep from chunking the shots. So in some way, I am fading the ball on purpose. My options are to fade the ball or chunk it, the fade usually ends up closer to the hole.

For anyone that plays a draw with your irons - Do you play your right elbow as far inside on your iron swings as you do with your woods?

I usually draw my irons, that is when I don't block and push trying to take the cover off ..... Anyway, I wouldn't mess with a different elbow position for different clubs. To me, it's a fundamental that shouldn't change. Like the other poster, I would think about swing plane, and I would also consider correct weight shift - are you sure you're shifting forward enough with your irons? I find that when I load up on the backswing but don't come forward properly on the downswing, I usually chunk the shot. Rhythm is everything.

I'm not an instructor, far from it. These are just my musing on the subject from my own painful experience.

Thanks for your help.

I think the weight shift could be the problem. I have found problems in my weight shift lately. I have been working on it.

I also found that if I stand 1/2 inch closer to the ball I am hitting a much more solid shot. I have gotten into the groove of where to stand so it feels really uncomfortable moving that little bit closer, but the results are much better. I am going to keep working on that and the weight shift and see if that fixes the problems.

Thank you again for your help.

    • I have an update… I don't have much of a response, because the fact that they would ADD the numbers for the lead and trail shoulder together… I mean, wow. I was giving them too much credit. Nobody would think to assume they were doing THAT. That's beyond comical. One of the biomechanists I talked to put it this way: "So if I squatted down and went from 180 to 90 deg knee angle, then I would say 180 deg range of motion because I have two knees?" I'd type more (maybe), but honestly, I'm laughing a bit too hard. 🤣 Update: Mini Manavian blocked me on Instagram, so I cannot see his post showing Bryson with about 50° of range of motion (with a driver) from P4 to P7, and 75° only if you go out to the mid-follow-through. What a terrible loss for me. 😉
    • Thanks, interesting to read. The swing is definitely very timing dependent. I hit it consistently I guess but consistently bad.
    • I've shot 91-74 on the same day before. Couple of years ago played a two round tournament on Bethpage Black. I shot 72 in the first round and 90 in the second. First round I played very well. Second round I played okay, but had about 5 shots that hit the lips of bunkers and bounced down into them. A couple of those wound up in footprints - I was unamused - and I failed to get them out. Anyway - lots of bunkers and my bunker play isn't great and then add a couple of footprints and me getting pretty tired and it added up to a lot.  Only you can really tell though what's causing the variance. It might be that your swing is very timing dependent and when it's timed well you play well and when it's not then it goes all over the place. In that case, some lessons and working on your swing could be the key. If it's more that you tend to feel like you hit it fairly consistently, but you have days where the shots come off and days where they don't, then that's more likely a course management issue. If that's what you need to work on, then you could read Lowest Score Wins and build a plan of attack based on that.  Rest assured though that a pretty big range from high to low is fairly common. Even PGA Tour players often have 18-20 shot spreads from best to worst rounds in a season. It's a common affliction among golfers.
