Hi, I'm new to golf. I started roughly a month ago and I'm not very good.

Firstly, I have to ask, what are the cons of a straight back full swing. In a normal swing, the clubhead goes from square at 6o'clock to open when it's parallel to the ground and on the downswing, back to square. Well, what are the cons of hinging the right wrist immediately from the start of the swing, causing the clubhead to be "square" throughout the backswing.

My next question is that according to my golf instructor, I've been using a "right strong hand grip" and that that was no good. In this grip, my left thumb(i'm a righty) is not completely covered and my right palm is leaning towards the right side of the grip. Can anyone tell me the difference?

Thanks in advance.

The straight back swing helps get your swing on the correct plane. There is a tour guy theat does set his wrists at address but he had a wrist injury.

As far as the strong right grip. You don't want a grip that is too strong or too weak. The best way to check it is by looking at the V formed between the thumb and first finger on your hand. That V should point somewhere between your right ear and right shoulder. Another way to think about it is you should be able to see one or two knuckles on your right hand. If your grip is too strong eventually it will lead to hooksville. Weak grips are worse though so err on the side of strong. In a weak grip you would be able to see 3 or more knuckles on your right hand.

Another problem with bringing the club face back square is that it can cause to you come down "over the top" at a steep angle, causing you to take turf before the ball. If you do manage to hold it through to impact, more than likely the club face will not square, causing you to fade or slice the ball. (Right hander).

    • You can pre-order an R50 here for pretty rapid shipping (these are back-ordered almost everywhere): https://www.playbetter.com/products/garmin-approach-r50-golf-launch-monitor-simulator?ghref=2301%3A700794. This is an affiliate purchase, and I'm willing to kick back lifetime ad-free Supporter membership here on TST or a 90-minute GEARS session for the cost of a regular member lesson (about 1/3 the cost). Also, I'll record a video myself soon when I get an R50.

    • Yes, this is the 2024 model. DSG ruined what Callaway perfected for most golfers. A darn good 3 piece golf ball. Now it's a 2 piece cheap ball. To me a 2 piece ball is fine and a 3 piece budget ball is better. I prefer a slightly harder ball, something in the 65-75 compression range that will perform similar to the old Gamer. The Titleist tru-feel is pretty good. I planned on giving Maxfli straightfli a try.
