Hey all, I got fitted for and purchased a new driver a few days ago and during my following 2 trips to the range, I was hitting it really well. Finally nice, straight drives.

However, on the golf course yesterday, my drives were miserable. I usually tee off just using a hybrid or fairway wood, but of course I wanted to use the new driver.

I went to the range today and after warming up a bit, I noticed that I was hitting the driver pretty well- nothing like the atrocities on the course yesterday. 4 out of 5 I'd be thrilled with on the course. I realized that after I would pick up another club (especially short irons) and then go back to my driver, the first shot or two would be awful.

Then I started hitting one ball with my 9 iron, then one shot with my driver, 9 iron, driver, etc. Almost all of the drives were CRAP. It seems like once I get into a "groove" with the driver, I can hit them straight. But not one the first shot after hitting another club.

Does anybody else have this problem? Some people say you should have the same swing, others say you should use different swings, etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yeh, this happens to me quite often.  i try to mix it up when i go to the range, and I do pretty good.  On the course it's a different story.  I've been trying to keep the same swing the same for everything.  I must be doing something wrong because, i'm very inconsistent right now.

It should be the same swing for every club. There are a few small changes in setup that will inherently alter your swing a bit, but all of the guidelines and mechanics are the same.

How are your iron shots when you have been hitting a driver for a while? Are your iron shots bad? i.e. does what you are describing go both ways?

What specifically is bad about your shots when they are bad?

It has always made sense to me to jump around in clubs when I'm at the range.  I almost always start out with my pitching wedge.  Mostly because it's the club I use to stretch with and it's also a club I like to hit.  Then I'll just keep randomly picking clubs until I've worked through them all.  It's definitely helped me with the problem you're describing.

I can hit the irons pretty consistently at the range and on the course. Those have never been an issue.. just the driver. The only time I can hit the driver consistently well is at the range, after hitting 2 or 3 bad shots.

What I mean by "bad" driver shots, is they either shoot off to the right or have a huuuuge slice.
