If you take out the Irish players then it's a shocking field but that's to be expected with no title sponsor and the prize fund halved from last year.

I will be attending all 4 days regardless

GMac running competitions every few days for free tickets.

Todays trivia question he is asking is:

How many major titles have been won by an Irish pro? First 10 correct answers emailed to tickets@europeantour.com win pairs of any day tix

I'm sure it wasn't his idea

Don't know if anyone saw any footage from earlier but Rory hit a truly remarkable shot on 14. 40 or 50 yard hook from the rough around a massive tree to about 12 feet. It looked Tiger-esque.

A great shot is when you go for it and pull it off. A smart shot is when you don't have the guts to try it. ~ Phil Mickelson.

I'm just reading about how Rory let a journalist's criticism re: his course management get to him and Rory replied with, " shut up.... You're a commentator and a failed golfer, your opinion means nothing! " Lol, we'll see how the media - who has rightfully been in love with Rors the past few weeks - handles the exchange.

I witnessed it in person today. It's one of those shots that you can't really describe the true scale of how great it was

Well the media over here are basically saying he had a right to respond to Jay Townsend due to him saying that he should fire his caddy (and hire Stevie Williams) and that his course management was the worst he has ever seen beyond under 10 boys golf competition . .

That's the home media perspective though, could be seen from a different perspective elsewhere. I doubt this will be a big deal anywhere else though.

Irish Central says that the "replace him with Stevie" comment was made by Townsend *after* Rory had made the "shut up" comment.  Ultimately, Rory will learn that no matter what the media says he will have to rise above it. This was very much the type of comment I'd expect from a 22-year old, but very out of step for Rory. He's sort of spoiled us with polite, thoughtful remarks showing a lot of humility.  I actually like this little exchange. I don't want stars to be nice gentlemen all the dayum time!

Apparently Townsend has been making digs in various media outlets about Rory's caddie JP Fitzgerald and Rory himself ever since The Masters. Rory was asked about his comments after and he said Townsends latest twitter comment "was the straw that broke the camel's back". He also says he has him blocked on twitter now so won't be reading his comments anymore (must have learned something from this site )

In terms of the golf today, I have never seen crowds so large on a Thursday. And I've been to many Irish Opens and other various events!

Hopefully a big deal isn't made out of it. I certainly have no issues with it.

It's one guy's criticism. He can't be that thin-skinned. Look at how Phil's decision-making is 2nd-guessed time and time again ... and then some.  Although it may be everyone's gut reaction, you can't just go around telling pundits to STFU when you're in Rory's position.

Glad you had a good time at the tourney ... I'm looking forward to seeing some highlights when I get home from work.

Me neither, I think Rory still has a big handful of passes that the media will allow him to use up.

I have also come to the conclusion that Harrington has turned into Seve. And not 80s Seve....90s Seve

He drove it into a carpark off the first tee. He still made par from there though

He hit a grand total of 9 greens today. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

I think Rory answered immature there. He should've better ignored it, I really dislike his reaction.

But the media won't make a big deal out of it, they need him as the next superstar. (Imagine if that comment was made by Phil or Tiger, Media would destroy them)

But his hook shot there was really cool

Yes we will have to wait and see.

Suspect that if Rory slips a bit the media will be after him. ( certainly in Europe)

Is he saying that unless your a successful golfer you cannot criticise the elite players (or their caddies) ?

This Jay Townsend guy comes across as a complete clown to me.  I mean really He pulled a driver on a tight hole in the FIRST ROUND!  Who cares dude acts like its the final round and it cost Rory the tournament.  I dont get it the guys acting like Rory is out there playing like Tin Cup of something.  I really dont have a problem with how Rory responded, sometimes you just got to call an idiot an idiot.

    • If you own a Stack radar (for now, it's limited to Stack radar only), and want to work on your wedge game… it turns out that wedge distances are 99% correlated to ball speed. So, with a small radar, you can practice your wedge game easily in a gamified way.
    • Day 11: 2/16/2025 Rince and Repeat: Just like yesterday I spent several 5-10 minute sessions working on what I learned on Friday.
    • Quick update. So, I got the PXG Secret Weapon and I have to say I like it... mostly. (see below) I spent some time with it on the range and I even gathered some data in doors. I'm not going to post data yet, as my swing is still a bit of a work in progress and I'd like to gather some more data after I settle down a little bit more. But here's my review.  First as a driver replacement. ... IMO it is not a replacement, it's clearly more of a supplement... for me anyway. Not long enough to really replace the driver. For me it's about 20 yards short of my driver. It is longer than my 30-wood off the tee. (15 yards-ish) I will say it is easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. I get some of my best shots teeing it low, but I also get some of my worst. If I tee it about a full inch off the ground I get very consistent shots. Super repeatable. Amazingly repeatable even with my messy swing. Off the tee, I find it draw biased just a bit. You can tinker with the set up if that isn't your personal cup of tea.  As a 3-wood replacement. For me it's about perfect. It's longer than my 3-wood off the deck (my data showed 10 yards longer) and it has a gentle fade to it, which I love. You do need a clean lie, but I never hit my 3-wood off anything but a clean lie anyway. I found it interesting that I hit a gentle fade off the deck and a slight draw off a tee. I'm sure that's not uncommon. Again, you can tinker with the set up to optimize that if you wanted to... I don't want to.  It's clearly a lot longer than my 3-wood off the tee. Easier to hit off the tee than my 3 wood, and off the deck it's also longer. So, it's a no-brainer 3-wood replacement for me. I will say that over the years I've learned to use my 3-wood for this low-flying-100-yard-punch-out-from-under-a-tree shot.  I'll have to see if the Secret Weapon can handle that duty. But it's going in the bag to replace the 3-wood.  I also turned my 5-wood down from 19 degrees to 17 degrees. ... Incidentally my 3-wood had been 16 degrees. I used to always hit my 5 wood and my hybrid about the same distance. This adjustment helps my gapping a bit at the top of the bag. I can clearly hit my 5-wood farther than my hybrid now.  Overall on the PXG Secret Weapon. The good: It's clearly longer and easier to hit off the tee than my 3-wood. It's a bit longer off the deck than my 3-wood.  It's super forgiving... surprisingly so.  It's uber adjustable. ... Although I do suggest getting fit for it. That will save you having to (or wanting to) buy a weight kit just to try out the infinite number of set ups. The headcover is super cool.  The maybe not so good: Shots out of the middle sound great. Shots off the heal sound great. Shots off the toe sound ... what's the work... clangy? It's very forgiving off the toe and the heal. The flight and the distance are incredibly consistent. But the sound off the toe isn't great.  For me I tend to draw it off the tee and fade it off the deck. You can set it up to be biased either way, but in my hands I think if I set up a draw off the deck, that might induce a duck hook off the tee. ... In fairness that could also be where my swing is at right now.  It's pretty spendy. ... If I really stop and think about it, I paid $450 for a new 3-wood. Granted it's a better performing 3-wood. But for me it's really a 3-wood replacement.
