I am trying to decide on which Cobra irons to buy, the S9s or FPs. I noticed on Golf Digest's Hot List issue of February 2007 that the S9s were rated as a super game improvement iron, while the FPs were rated as a game improvement iron.

I played golf about 20 years ago and stopped due my job with the US government (too much overseas travel). Just started playing this past fall, now that I am retired in Florida and can play year round. I have been shooting in the low 90s and plan on taking a few lessons to tweak my swing. My swing speed with a five iron is between 68-72 mph and my swing consists of a moderately slow takeaway, with a faster downswing. I normally hit my #5 iron between 150-155 yards. I have a tendency to push my iron shots to the right on occasion.

Has anyone hit both of these irons?

Which iron would you recommend for me?

Here's my opinion - Golf is a game of misses so pick equipment that will help maximize your goals. If your goal is play with friends, enjoy the scenery, friendships, etc then choose a club with some forgiveness. However if your goal pure competition then choose the tools that will enable to you to compete.

Hope that helps and welcome back to the game

Definately get fitted if you haven't already...lie angle, shaft flex, shaft material, and a several other factors can help you rediscover your game. I haven't had experience with Cobra's, but word of mouth is good.

I have had experience with Cleveland Launcher, Taylormade R7 CGB's, Wilson Ci6's. All three were great sets...just get fitted, find a set that feels and sounds good to you. Enjoy and glad to have you back!

Cobra, a sister company of Titleist, seems to be making superb equipment these past few years. I use a Cobra driver and hybrids. I've never used their irons, but I have handled those which you've mentioned. My advice is to go to a range with examples of both clubs to help determine which club feels better to you. Once you've chosen one over the other, get fitted by a competent pro. Then enjoy your new clubs! By the way, it would be next to impossible to make a poor choice between the two models you're considering. Good luck to you.

    • Day 37: did my drill swings in the garage with foam balls for about 15 minutes. Working on getting my backswing more turned and then going from there.
    • Thanks but honestly… I don't know any other way. I don't mind being wrong so long as I know where to go from there. I don't like being wrong — I'd love to get things right (which is different than "being right"). I recommend grabbing a furniture slider or a paper plate or something, and doing something like this: First, make a swing where you let your trail foot swing out as you turn, then twist that foot back in. From DL and FO, it'll look like this: Then, during a regular backswing, try to twist your foot in slightly (demonstrated in the left image): You'll notice a crease along the trail side of your hip, your pelvis will "fold" into that thigh (internal rotation of the hip joint), and your "bits" will be squished a little between your pelvis and your thigh. Ben Hogan said once: "At the top of the back swing the groin muscle on the inside of your rt [sic] leg near your right nut will tighten," Hogan wrote. "This subtle feeling of tightness there tells you that you have made the correct move back from the ball." I don't know about that, but you will probably feel something down around that area.
    • Yep. I think it will start to feel even more athletic when we start on the downswing stuff later.  I know, it's just I want to be younger so I have more time to enjoy the changes. 🙂
    • I need to drop a couple of stone. 🙂 😛    Yep. Yeah, but in the end, it feels more athletic, like you're actually using your legs, yeah? As you know… we use the best available info we have. Like others, I was fooled a little by 2D images for awhile (moving or still). Unlike others, I've learned and grown and moved on since then, while they're still looking at their images (often from lousy camera angles).
