Jack Nicklaus has a strategy book in the 70's, Playing Lessons, where he speaks about the driver and amateurs.  He talks about trying to use the club in your bag which you hit naturally, use that club for an entire round and do not try to whale away with it.  "Again, do not whale away at the ball".  He wants you to swing easily and within your self.

The other point which I also used for a while was:  Tee off with your favorite iron and then use  a fairway wood on longer holes.  This became a great strategy to lean on when I got too wild with the driver.  I now have a utility hybrid which I can do well with from anywhere, so that makes it more enjoyable to go for it with either a longer iron or ....even the driver.
