My wife has been pushing the ball right a lot lately and isn't getting the yardage that she should.  At contact, you can see her club face wide open to the right and her arms are pushing the ball in the same direction, but she can't seem to fight the natural inclination to maintain this swing plane.  We've tried tweaking it but she complains that it feels "unnatural".  Any help would be appreciated.

all swing changes feel unnatural, thats normal. Im no swing guru, so take my comments with a grain of salt, but just a few observations more than anything. She has very little hip turn. Its all shoulders and arms, so on the down swing she kinda gets stuck and the path is to the right. She is very flat footed. There are probably some drills out there that involve no ball contact that will get her feeling the hip and shoulder rotation more. She looks like she has good co ordination so while any changes will mean going backwards for a bit. Things always get worse before they get better, but they will get better. She should have a lesson though, you'll get a thousand different answers starting with mine.

Haha... like the reaction at the end. But yea, hips should turn and right leg should lose some flex while doing it. However, the biggest problem IMO is that she doesn't understand how the club should travel inside. When she watches you or whoever she has seen swing the club she thinks the arms are the ones doing the work. The reality is that the shoulders should move the arms inside. To prove that point you can have her stand up and hold her arms out in front of her and then turn her shoulders 90*. Everything will have moved inside without the arms working independently of her shoulder turn.

From there just get weight forward and swing away.

I'm no golf guru but I understand the fundamentals of the swing. A driver swing that is steep will likely fade and a upright more lateral swing will turn left most of the time (as long as the club face isn't open that is). her spine angle is upright at address but on her backswing her spine angle drops down and the swing becomes more steep. then it flattens out again on the downswing and it looks like she is even leaning back a little, big no no. have her extend that right arm at impact to release the club head, its staying open.

here is a nice video that simplifies the downswing.

    • Day 27 - 2026-01-16 Played 18 with some of the usual "too many voices" going on when I'm working on swing stuff. Fun to get out in great bay area winter weather.
    • I know one recent college grad who's trying the same thing.  This guy was a Division III All-American, went on to play one year at Division I LSU, and is not working hard.  He won the Gulf States Open, a pro event, and made it to the second stage of the Korn Ferry Tour School late in the fall.  And didn't make the cut to get to the final stage.  I won't talk about swing or play stuff, but I believe there are a couple of things that are essential.  Obviously, talent, and drive, or work ethic.   I can't tell you how to do it, but you HAVE to get through it.  Golf is going to be your life, and it takes lots of work. Two more things that are really critical.  You'll need the facility to be able to practice.  My young friend stayed in Baton Rouge, as a past player on the team he can still use the LSU practice facilities.  And money.  Its unlikely you'll be able to work a full-time job and practice the way you will need to.  You'll probably need backing, from a parent, from a consortium of friends or club members., something to support you. Good luck, its not an easy path, but anything is possible.  Another young man from our area, Mike Brennan, just won for the first time on the "big" PGA Tour.
    • No one in the world is as smart as Phil thinks he is.
    • Get more comfortable with being uncomfortable. If you don’t like practicing then give up now. You don’t have the passion to become a pro. Unless that mentality changes you won’t do well under stressful situations.    Call the PGA Tour and ask. They probably have resources available.
