I currently am looking at upgrading my hybrid clubs. I currently have the burner superfasts with regular shafts. I have a 98-100 mph club head speed with the 3H. I tend to get a very high launch with it. Do I need to be looking at stiff shafts when upgrading or stick with the regulars? I'm not really concerned with distance as I am with control. Or would I be better off sticking with the regular shafts and just slowing my swing down? I also tend to hook the ball with these hybrids, and they look pretty closed at address. These are the only clubs I hook, but I'm far from having a good swing also.

I have a similar problem!

I play Titleist AP2 irons (custom fitted and I LOVE THEM!), 910D2 driver and Titleist Vokey wedges. I hit these well and I am happy with the way my game is progressing. I recently got myself a 910 H hybrid and on the swing monitor at golf galaxy i was told my swing speed with the driver is 100MPH and i'd be better off with a stiff shaft for the hybrid. So that's what I got. I was also advised to change my driver's shaft to a shift flex to gain distance.

Now at the driving range its hard for me to hit this brand new hybrid with a stiff shaft. I am hitting my driver just fine (by that i mean straight!) that has a regular shaft and getting about 220-230 yards. The guy at my driving range checked my swing speed using the Mizuno DNA system and found it to be about 82MPH when using irons.

My question is should I use a driver and hybrid with stiff shaft and irons with my usual regular shaft? Or should I stay with regular shaft for everything?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Titleist 910D2 10.5 degrees regular shaft
Titleist 910H stiff (PROBLEM CLUB!)
Titleist AP2 irons 5-9 regular flex (2 degrees flat)
Vokey wedges 48,52,56 degrees (2 degrees flat)
Nike Method putter (AMAZING!)

The regular shafts feel so much better to me than the stiffs too. I have a regular shaft in my diablo octane driver and have pretty decent luck with it. I had a stiff shaft in a callaway ft-iq and I hated it. No feel to it at all and felt dead. My driver swing range is 100-110 mph. 100 being an nice solid swing and 110 when I cut loose. I'm also thinking about replacing my 3w with an adams 1H. Just don't want to regret loading up on several new hybrids and regretting it. One thing I hate about living in the middle of no where, no club fitters around and no where to try out a big assortment of clubs.

TS: Definitely try stiff shafts, and I recommend trying steel shafts if possible. They'll help keep the ball down and lower spin, as well as feeling more like your irons. Taylormade puts weak shafts in, as well as making them super long. As such, they will balloon and hook if you have a powerful swing.

Another point is that different shaft makes can play stiffer than the flex might indicate. Torque and kick point matter as much as the flex, and weight also affects a lot in terms of trajectory.

Thanks for the post. I've hit a friend's cheaper set of walter hagen's 5H with a steel shaft. It felt almost just like hitting a 5 iron. I used my iron swing with it. With the taylormade's, you almost use a fairway wood swing which is a little different for me. My taylormade regular shaft seems more flexible than my regular shaft on my diablo octane so I have no doubt you are right about the taylormade shafts being lighter than most, which is even worse for my situation. My shots always go way left, to left, to straight. If I swing pretty easy then the club has a total different feel and acts more normal. But If I use 85-90% they usually go left and pretty high.
